The book was set up really well until the end when it literally fell apart. I enjoyed the atmosphere but the twist that everyone kept going on about was super unsatisfying and didn’t make any sense. Dissapointed honestly

For the right reader The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring could be life changing. But, for most, this book will likely flatline.

I went into this SO excited, but came out feeling extremely let down. This ended up being 450 pages of nonsense?????? Maybe I'm just dumb, but nothing about the plot (especially the EXTREMELY out of left field ending) made any sense to me. On top of that, I also feel like this book handled certain situations and scenarios in really harmful ways and it just did not work for me. It felt like the author was trying to go for shock factor and it just ended up coming off more insensitive than anything else.

TW: child abuse, rape, pedophilia, miscarriage, gore

Buddy read with Melanie and Jocelyn!

Didn’t love this book. I was highly excited when I saw the title. But the plot wasn’t straight forward, the characters were meh, and I just didn’t love it the further I read.

I’m a delicate flower when it comes to scary stories, and this one creeped me out to the point where I had to play a silly game on my phone before I could sleep. Tried again over lunch - daylight! - and nope. I’m out at the halfway mark.

I’ll have to ask someone else to tell me the rest. Preferably at high noon.

Mari just wants a place that she belongs. She has lied about her age and teaching experience and it has finally paid off. She has been hired as an English teacher at a finishing school with a rocky and possibly haunted past. She is ignoring all of the warnings because we wants to hide from the military that has taken over the government and she also doesn’t want to face her mother’s disappearance. She is willing to overlook a lot, but when she can’t get a satisfactory answer about a missing student, her secret investigation uncovers more than even her mind could have imagined.

The Tenth Girls is a stand-alone gothic thriller with an added twist. The story is told through two different timeline viewpoints and readers must discover the connections. Faring has definitely provided a different ending than I was originally expecting. Although I would have liked my ending too, the unexpected twist was refreshing. This book will be enjoyed by many readers and it definitely should be tried by all triller fans.

2.5 stars - Picked this up since it was one of the few English-language Argentine books I could find during a recent trip to the country. Gothic horror set in creepy boarding school is typically exactly my cup of tea, and Faring's writing builds up the atmosphere marvelously from page 1. The story is perfectly rooted in the reality of Argentina's 'Dirty War' when thousands disappeared and violence against women was rampant. Then starting about a third of the way in, I began to be more confused than creeped out and it went downhill from there.
Spoiler The twist that the whole setting was a RPG was certainly surprising but it also fell flat for me since it's quite common nowadays, ex. with 'Don't Worry Darling.' It provoked thoughtful questions about ethics and morality, yet disconnected me from the characters because the relationships and motivations felt fraudulent. By the time Mavi tried to escape her fate, the game was low stakes for me.
Additionally, although the desciption says "steeped in Patagonian myth," I'm unsure how truthfully indigenous culture is represented as there are several cringey comments about the local tribe, not to mention the casual racism (which somewhat makes sense in a historical context but seemed unnecessary). Overall, in my opinion, the story would've had more impact if it was condensed and ended differently.

It was going so well, and then everything took a turn for the "what the fuck am i even reading".
I legit did not understand the last 3rd of the book there was so much like nonsense just thrown around and things coming to light that made absolutely no sense.
I'm so disappointed because of how excited I was to read the book, the synopsis sounded so great, this could have went in a totally different direction and been great.
The whole tenth girl concept was not as great as it could have been.
I'm just very.... why did it go in the direction it did. like wtf did I just read???
idk, this whole black mirror shit was not something I thought suited the book AT ALL.
Idk, it just wasn't good.
the ending was super anticlimatic with a twist of "why is this even happening?"
nothing made sense.
I regress, i'm truely disappointed.

I am EXTREMELY torn on this. I am giving it four stars because I legit couldn't put it down at points and it always kept me guessing. But... what the hell was that ending? I guess it ultimately worked for me but when it was first revealed, with no warning and basically not clues (there have to be clues, right?) I almost threw the book across the room. But it was inventive, SO original, and atmospheric so if it looks like your thing maybe give it a chance. But it was a WILD ride.
