The themes here are culutral identity/heritage, nature’s retribution and penance. And call it a gory hauting too, if you will. Most of these are themes and a topics far outside my knowledge, which only made me love it even more (I’m a sucker for a challenge).
These four men are caught between the Indian culture in their blood, the White Man’s culture that won’t ever accept them, and their fucked up non-belonging to both.
The narration is written in what I think is a verbal style mimicking a particular American Indian accent. It uses imagery and idioms in a way wholly new to me. This took some getting used to, but once I did, I was mesmerized. There’s a kind of lulling poetry to it that drew me in hard.
The blend between nature, humanity, identity, culture, mysticism, creeping horror and bloody revenge dug it’s claws into my flesh and had me hooked from page one. This is likely to end up on my 2025 Top 10.
Will DEFINITELY stick with Jones for a time to come.

Loved this book! I started it maybe one, two years ago and started it over again. I had stopped right before things took a turn. Scary, lots of dread at turning the pages. Loved the basketball. I love his acknowledgements sections always

enjoyed the imagery a lot, as well as this form of revenge plot. several times had a "dude NO" reaction (in a good way). the most difficult thing about this book tho is the writing, its not the worst ive ever read but it has a tendency to be incredibly slow.

Opis książki jest totalnie nietrafiony. Bardzo na wyrost i obiecuje coś innego niż dostarcza lektura. Nikt tu niczemu nie stawia czoła, bardziej niż spętanie dziedzictwem widać jak ono zanika lub wtapia się w nowoczesny świat zostawiając jakieś smutne skrawki i zagubionych ludzi, nie ma wrażenia wielkich duchów i wielkiej Natury, bo ta książka to nie jest jakiś literacki majstersztyk żeby w ogóle tworzyć epickie opisy. Zmylił mnie ten opis i zabierałam się do książki 3 razy przez to.
