Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass are both stories that advocate knowing where you are going and starting on your way. Both in life and the stories, you will encounter unexpected things, friendly and unfriendly. Sometimes you have to ask directions. In the end, there is virtually no limit to what you can accomplish.
Alice shrinks in both stories. In one she falls down a rabbit hole and in the other she enters a glass house. Changing her size allows her to gain new perspective and see things she couldn’t otherwise. Gaining new perspectives is an important part of determining where you want to go in life. In both stories Alice sees and seeks to enter a lovely garden. A door that is much too small blocks her in one, while a confusing path slows her in the other. In life there are often challenges and difficulties on the path to what you desire to achieve.
Sometimes Alice asks for directions, unsure where she needs to go. Directions are given by a Cheshire cat in Wonderland and by a chessboard queen in the Looking Glass. In the Looking Glass, a gentleman sitting opposite Alice on a train says, “So young a child ought to know which way she’s going, even if she doesn’t know her own name!” This represents the importance of having goals. You will never achieve a goal that you do not have. Alice seeks to become a queen in the Looking Glass, since that is the object of a pawn in a game of chess.
All of Alice’s strange encounters are foreshadowed by an important message Lewis Carroll slips into the beginning of the Wonderland tale. “For, you see, so many out-of-the-way things had happened lately, that Alice had begun to think that very few things indeed were really impossible.” Determine your way, quickly begin, and push past difficulties to your goals in life.

Flashing lights and we
Took a wrong turn and we
Fell down a rabbit hole
You held on tight to me
'Cause nothing's as it seems
And spinning out of control
