I should have read these as separate books, because I honestly would have given two different ratings. For me, Adventures in Wonderland was 5 stars and the Looking Glass was maybe 3. So we will go with 4 for the whole.

Adventures in Wonderland was captivating. The tone of light, playful absurdity worked. The plot (or, the closest thing to a plot) was actually somewhat compelling, maybe because Alice was new to this strange world. I think this was what was missing from the Looking Glass for me. Something of the magic of the first book was lost when she became more used to the world and the upside down nonsense mischief or its culture. The playfulness with a spark of magic became repetitive and tired after about the first half of the Looking Glass. I had a hard time paying attention, keeping track of what was happening, and caring near the end. It just felt like different versions of the same event at a certain point. You just can't play the same trick that many times. But the first wonderland book - no notes. Absolutely delightful silliness, with some moments of just enough growth and emotional weight.

+ audiobook (libby)

very nonsensical stories where they told this lil annoying girl who offended everyone she met and was told that she was stupid at every turn lmao

might read it again in the future

I definitely preferred ‘Alice in wonderland’ over ‘through the looking glass’

The imagination and creativity needed to create this world is unbelievable and it was easy to get sucked into the story with how smooth each scene transitions from one to the next

I’ve never understood the fascination with the Wonderland story. This is my second time re-reading Alice in Wonderland and first time reading Through the Looking Glass and I just don’t get it. It’s stressful to be honest and incomprehensible. I get that it’s suppose to be a magical world of nonsense meant to be fun but I just find it and the characters exhausting. I’ve also seen the animated Disney version and the Tim Burton adaptations and don’t particularly enjoy those either so I think this sorry and its ideas just aren’t for me. I’ve yet to find an iteration of this story I enjoy.
