It's been years since I've read Agatha Christie. What a delight!
Hallowe'en Party is one of Poirot's later cases. It also features Ariadne Oliver (crime novelist) who has featured in several of the Poirot novels ( Mrs McGinty's dead, Dead Man's Folly and others). However, it is my first time meeting her as I am not reading the novels in any order just as I find them in charity shops or book sales. I am curious to Know how she is characterised in the other earlier novels she has been in, whether her apple obsession was an ongoing character quirk or appeared in this case as it fitted the plot. Her appearances would also be interesting to follow as apparently Christie put them in to be self- parodying.
The case is the murder of Joyce Butler a 13 year old girl who was found drowned in an apple bobbing tub. The work of an unstable mind most of the characters assume. Someone let out from an asylum to early who lacks the self control not to go round drowning young girls at parties. Who else would or could do such a thing? Mrs Oliver however enlists the help of Hercule Poirot to get to the bottom of it. She has identified key information that everyone seems to be overlooking, Judith Butlers confession that she herself witnessed a murder. Was this the reason Joyce died? Can she be trusted? How many murderers does Poirot actually need to find?
On the whole I enjoyed this book, I liked what the character of Mrs Oliver added to it and the storyline was enjoyable. The main disappointment was the ending it was very much a "really? Thats the direction we are going with this" It seemed rushed and nonsensical to me after all the build up in the story. But still a solid Christie novel and one that I would recommend although not as a starting point.

The ending was reasonably interesting enough that I think this story could have been a quite good short story -- but as a full-length work, it was too repetitive and dull in the middle. Oh well. At least it fulfilled my Popsugar Reading Challenge prompt for a book about or set on Hallowe'en. But I'm disappointed; I thought the reading challenge had pushed me to find an overlooked Christie that would be a pleasant surprise, something new to me that I wouldn't have found otherwise -- but it seems this one is overlooked for a reason.
I expected this story to go much like the movie did, but the two stories actually had very little in common, so if you have already watched/read one and felt like it might spoiler the other, well, worry no more! You can enjoy both!
I really loved the movie, but there is a quality so spectacular and unique about her stories that no one can truly reproduce. The final image of the murderer and their motivations in this book is really quite something.

Pasti cocok soalnya banyak orang rupawan
