Well drawn but lots of problems. The weaving together of past, present, and myth is pretty clunky--it isn't clear Thompson really knows what he wants the book to do. And the comments others have made about the Western Orientalizing fantasia are unfortunately pretty accurate.
Beautiful, beautiful book. Bittersweet and harsh at times, but worth it for the love and the symbolism that Thompson is always SO good at showing. And, of course, the artwork is incredible.
Wow.
This is an epic tale of two orphans and all the terrible things that they endure to survive in harsh conditions of society. The book is beautifully and intricately illustrated, and the storytelling of Craig Thompson is amazing and well done. I found it odd that this book about Islam, the Quran, and Arabic culture is written by a white guy from the midwest, but his attention to detail and dedication to telling the religious tales accurately was astounding. Truly, a great read, but I would recommend it for older teens as there is A LOT of trauma, sexual assault and graphic nudity.

Amazing book...beautiful at its core...sweeping in its execution. Great follow up to Blankets.
The artwork in this novel is really beautiful and intricate, something I could not get enough of. The story is hard to read at points and very bittersweet but the way that Craig Thompson weaves folk tales and religious stories is really beautiful, and couple with the art work it really blew me away! I still like Blankets the best out of all of his works that I've read so far but this is definitely second for me.

not a fan of blankets, but this thompson graphic novel got such raves that i gave it a shot. so glad i did. one of the better, if not top gn's i've read in a long while. such an emotional (without me crying) read--it'll tap into every feeling, good and bad. reading it on the bus is pretty interesting as she's naked for lots of sections, but it's done so tactfully that i didn't get the sense that anyone would think i'm reading smut or something (not that i should care, but bus people are weird sometimes). not as great as some of my favorites, but if you love gn's and a good, solid story--give this a read.

Not as good as Blankets, but still a very capturing book. The parallels between the story created by Thompson and Arabic and Judeo-Christian Biblical/Quranic narratives didn't feel forced or extraneous. The most striking feature for me was actually kind of late in the story, when I fully realized that the story was set in the present day. That realization fed back into the earlier chapters and really stunned me: that such events can and do continue to happen. Not an easy story, but a good one. And the artwork really is stunning.
I really liked this book. Beautifully illustrated, and a very moving story.
