Wow, what a sequel!!

Once again, I was planning on giving this four stars just because there were a few elements I didn't like
I didn't like Rosalind's storyline, especially since it was held back for so long as a dramatic reveal so we didn't get a lot of insight into how involved she was and why she did what she did. I also thought Dimitri was a pretty weak villain, and we didn't get much insight into why he was doing what he was doing, other than that he was a bad guy. I felt like the book was weakened somewhat by trying to paint Rosalind as a villain of some kind while also removing her agency in the situation, implying that it was all because of Dimitri that she did what she did. I think the book MIGHT have been better served giving Dimitri a POV and giving Rosalind some more focus up front, and then painting their story as a parallel to Roma and Juliette's. It would have eliminated some big reveals later on, but it would have made the first half of the book more investing and would have given the two villains more motivation later on
.

However, I have to give this a 4.5 stars just because of how well the ending played. Chloe Gong knows how to stick a landing! The epilogue genuinely made me cry, and I wasn't expecting it to.

Overall, it was a really incredible read, and I can't wait to see what Chloe Gong writes next! Such an interesting world, so many cool characters, and such a great way to adapt an old story.

This book will have you on the edge of your seat no doubt. Here you have a sequel that is shocking, humourous and in its foundation, political. I do not want to reveal too much but Gong has successfully crafted the most complex and riveting characters. Juliette is wise, cutthroat and embodies a much more empowered version of her original character written by Shakespeare. Though she is wise, she is also flawed— which makes her loveable. She is unfairly torn between two political forces: loyalty or betrayal. Roma is another complex character who pales in comparison to his sister, Alisa who is not a central plot device by any means; but she proves herself to be a hero in her own right in this mind boggling, emotionally distressing (in the best way possible) young adult masterpiece.

I will not say anything else other than if you want to see what real women are made of, you must read this book. 5 of the easiest stars I gave this year.

Juliette and Roma are too much.
Too much in a positive way because they are freaking adorable and I couldn't stop rooting for them.
Too much in a negative way because they are still based on the Shakespeare play and have to do all the dramatics of that.
However, the best thing happening in this book is Benedikt and Marshall. They were definitely worth the wait.
The plot of the story is based on someone blackmailing both gangs, and because of it, the patriarchs make Juliette and Roma work together. It feels forced in places. There could have been some trimming of heavy politics. However, overall this is a worthy sequel to one of the best YA debuts of the pazt few years. If you haven't, read this duology.

"Lovers turned in to strangers, and it cut deep enough to bleed"

Honestly, there are no words that can describe how much I loved this book, it is one of the best sequels I have read in my life, if not the best. I usually think that long books have more pages than what they need, but this one is not the case, each point of view, each thing said was necessary to delve into the characters and the plot. I adored this book and highly recommend it.

I already loved Juliette in the first book, now I just adore her so much more. Everything she does and says she thinks about it meticulously to protect the people she cares about. She is one of my favorite main characters in my entire life.

Roma in the first book I did not care, I liked him, but nothing more. Until this book came and now I adore Roma and his heart.

All the other characters, Benedikt, Marshall, Katheleen (Celine), and Rosalind, were developed in much more depth in this book and I am completely fascinated with what I discovered about them.

The relationships between each character were beautiful, from Roma and Juliette to Marshall and Benedikt. They were so well developed and written that I can honestly go to die in peace right now after reading them.

The end, THE END. I can't say much, obviously, but I will say that I cried and am satisfied with what I read. Hope is the last thing to be lost in this life.

"In this life they had been born enemies. In this life they had blood for miles between them, wide enough to run a river, deep enough forge a valley. In the next, maybe there would be peace"

THIS BOOK ANNIHILATED ME WHAT THE HELL??????
CHLOE GONG NEEDS TO PAY FOR MY THERAPY BILLS BECAUSE WHAT WAS THAT ENDING!?!? WHY AM I IN LOVE WITH BOOKS THAT HAVE AN AMBIGUOUS ENDING???
*deep breath* *inhale* *exhale* POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Okay. Alright. I'm fine. I survived reading this book. I had the excuse of exams to hold off because I was scared but in the end my curiosity caught up to the trick. So here I am, wondering what the hell happened.
The characters, as always are *chef's kiss*. Alisa Montagova has become my new favourite kid. That girl deserves so much more than being kidnapped at every turn, oh my god ;-;
Ben and Mars deserve all the happiness in the world. I was having a headache because of Ben's sadness, and every time they both were close to meeting, something would happen. It felt like watching a Hindi TV serial drama in the best way, of course. Because their reunion was so satisfying. And Marshall and Juliette really did have the cutest friendship ever. Appreciate the m/f platonic relationship without any cumbersome romance.
Wonder why we had to be told that the boys were off living life instead of being shown all their happiness. Yeah, this is me begging for a BenMars novella ;-;

I really, really, really loved Kathleen's
(or as I should call her now: Celia)
character development. She is another one of my favourites beside Alisa and the main characters.
In addition, the angst and tension between Roma and Juliette was done really well. They ripped my heart out and then stitched it together and then repeated the process. The only iffy thing was when the truth of Juliette's actions was revealed, they zoomed a bit too fast into kissing and whispering I-love-yous when Juliette had
killed Tyler just hours ago
I dunno about you, but it just seemed a bit too fast for both of them to go from hate-loving each other to sexy times. Or maybe this is just another ace thing. \_(O_O)_/
The book dragged just a little bit at around the 75% mark but that's probably because I figured out who was up to those shenanigans in the city and was waiting for the mains to come to the realization. The rest of it though: the references from the Shakespeare play, the climax, Roma and Juliette and their struggle with their parents, all of it was amazing. Really appreciated the talk on colonization and the white people jokes (thank you Miss Cai <3)
