It would've been a quick read, but I didn't want it to end. Beautiful imagery, beautiful poem, amazing combination of the two.

This was a wonderful read, with stunning visuals.

I love Greek mythology, and the life of Odysseus is certainly a most interesting one. I have never read the original book about the Odyssey, but I think I got a good summary of what it was about from this graphic novel. The flow of panel to panel is smooth, and no page was boring.

The graphics are sophisticated and so brilliantly captivating. However, it is rather graphic when it comes to scenes with violence, and there were some truly unsettling creatures that were drawn (think Scylla). Additionally, some of the visuals were a little questionable in general (I'm looking straight at the cyclops and his piercings). This certainly isn't a book for any young teens, but I think it is an acceptable read for those who are older, with the more mature themes.

I would have to say that my favourite sections in this book was when Odysseus went to the underworld and saw all the fallen and dead soldiers and Greek heroes, simply because of the colour palette. Although the monochrome red glow in the Cyclops' cave comes in a close second. The saddest page by far was when Odysseus learnt about the fate of his old dog, from before he went to Troy. It made me tear up a little, if I'm being honest.

Putting everything aside, I have to give this book 5 stars. I would recommend that if you have the opportunity to read this book, you should. It only took me between 2-3 hours to read through the whole thing. Give it a shot!

Gareth Hinds has authored a number of graphic novels from classic literature, and I had previously read his Iliad in 2019, though it was an uncolored, advance copy. The only previous familiarity I had with The Odyssey was what I have absorbed through cultural osmosis and having read Miller's Circe. For that reason I'm unable to comment on its faithfulness to the original, but it felt like a well-rounded retelling, and I enjoy Hinds' illustration style. Some chapters were flashbacks, and very occasionally I had to reorient myself to the timeline and current focal character, but on the whole I recommend both these Greek epic adaptations to fans of graphic novels.

It never ocurred to me that a great classic like this could be reimagined in such a visual and entertaining way! After reading Circe by Madeline Miller, ( also a great reinterpretation but with more focused view on fantasy and romance. A great spin off nevertheless) I wanted to read more about Odysseus's story and trials. It's not even worth mentioning how hard is to read the original one, Homer's Odyssey, even from translations and retellings. We may never know what truly happened in ancient Greece or what how exactly Homer told the original story, but we can only imagine and reimagine the stories of the great Aegean people. In all greatness, author did a great job portraying Odysseus and the others, it is a book that attracts both young & old folk or any other Greek myths fanatic like myself.
