Zoe's Tale

John Scalzi

3.73 AVERAGE

This is essentially the same story as told in The Last Colony, but from Zoë’s perspective. It’s much more of a Young Adult flavour of book, which is a nice change of pace in this fascinating series. It also allows the author to fill in a number of gaps so the whole story makes more sense. It also affords us a much deeper insight into the nature of the Obin, the aliens given consciousness by Zoë’s biological father, and their relationship with Zoë.

On to the next book. Yay.

It was nice to have all of the details from the story of the previous book laid out, but a middle aged man writing as a teenage girl felt kind of creepy to me.

Loved this book! An entertaining, meaningful coming of age story, full of aliens. Perfect!

3.5 stars. Scalzi's first book that made me cry. Thrice. Well, the first two were more like sniffles, but I did bawl the third time.

This is much, much better than the tepid [b:The Last Colony|88071|The Last Colony (Old Man's War #3)|John Scalzi|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1437660786s/88071.jpg|18279847]. Zoe's POV is not a retelling; there were so many events unfolding that you could only see through her eyes, especially the ones with the Obin and other aliens. I think her relationship with Hickory and Dickory is my favorite part of the book, as heartbreaking as it is.

I was rather worried that it would be too YA for me. It indeed was, at some parts, but luckily they're easy to ignore. Now I wish I have Zoe's POV for the rest of the series. She has her adopted dad's sense of humor, after all. Outstanding retelling of The Last Colony from the point of view of Zoe Boutin-Perry, adopted daughter of the main characters of that story, John Perry and Jane Sagan. Another well crafted tale from John Scalzi; solid, fleshed out characters, superbly paced, tight storyline, and thoughtful message. Scalzi's book are always a very nice change from the shoot 'em up/save the princess/be macho/space battle sci-fi that dominates the genre. Absolutely on of the greats to be named in the same breath as Asimov, Heinlein, Dick, et al.

I liked and enjoyed the Last Colony. But I LOVED Zoe’s Tale. Partly it’s cause I love seeing a story I know told from a different perspective. And partly because Zoe’s feelings and emotions made me feel and cry.

Clever idea to show the events of the Last Colony from Zoe's point of view. Worked very well in several spots.

Nice complement to "The Last Colony". I like seeing some of the events from Zoe's perspective, but also like finding out what the heck Zoe was doing with her friend Gretchen and her boyfriend Enzo, while Jane and John were leading the colony. And it was great hearing Zoe's take on Jane, who Zoe loved but could also see as scary, and her two Obin bodyguards.
