'The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly' is a beautifully written novel that explores themes of identity, freedom, and the human condition.
Sun-mi Hwang's prose is elegant and evocative, bringing to life the humble yet extraordinary world of a farm hen named Sprout. Through Sprout's struggles and triumphs, Hwang raises important questions about the nature of freedom, the importance of community, and the power of imagination.
The only thing I feel like I have to wonder about with this book is whether the translation left out a certain voice or a certain flair that the book otherwise didn't have. The language used is very basic but the story is too heavy in metaphor to allow what I felt was a literary level of childishness, which occasionally made the reading jarring.
Otherwise, I thought this novel was really beautiful. About the story of a hen who wants something more out of her life in the coup, redefining what it means to be a mother (not just blood), what family is, and the fear of defying a crowd. It's almost like the Little Prince, in the sense of that sort of fairy tale like atmosphere while dismantling certain concepts and sinking heavy into metaphor. The book leaves you a lot to think and rethink. As someone who has left her genetic family it was nice to read a book that didn't have a moral of blood being thicker than water, but rather a moral about the actual quote - that the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. I'm glad that I read this - possibly if my Korean gets any better I would love to read it in its actual language.
