Intelligently woven together, Brown does it again and is able to provide critical reflection to British society. The relationship of the characters is well done, even if strange but perhaps the haphazardness of it is more realistic. The shortness of the book highlights the literary feat of writing in the author's ability to put so much on the pages in so few words. Perhaps a book written for those who understand the cultural and class divides, as opposed to those who don't.

There are many themes explored in this book, but it’s primarily about greed. Everyone in this book doesn’t think about their actions or think deeply about their beliefs. They just are attempting to fill a needy pit inside. For me that doesn’t make for an interesting character I think that these xenophobic talking points are pretty boring so outside of the shock value of having characters revel in those beliefs there wasn’t much there. At no point was anything challenged so there just wasn’t any attention. This writer wrote well and I’d be interested in seeing what else they write. the conversations on journalism were interesting here and the belief of truth being a moving target was interesting as well as we got to see the story through multiple POV. It’s short so I was never bored and I would give this a lukewarm recommendation.

It seems very unkind to rate this novel so low. I actually don't think I understand what this novel is about. It has depressed me really! Do you have to be an academic to understand it's meaning? I thought I knew, but the links between the various perspectives are so tenuous in some respects, I'm not sure what is being achieved.

Hmmm. Not sure how to approach this one. It was very relevant in the way it covered race and society. The writing style was too straightforward, there was no emotional connection to any of these characters which impacted my enjoyment.
