“Remember—words are your weapons, they’re your tools, your currency: a twisty, slippery descent into the rhetoric of power.”
💰I read this one bc it was recently long-listed as a @booker finalist. If I’m being honest, these books usually feel too intellectual and coded in their meaning, but I really, really wanted to attempt reading (most) all of the Longlist this year. This was my first library hold to come in (I’ve previously read Flashlight.)
💰Ultimately, I’m afraid the point of this book may have flown right over my head. After reading, I checked out some reviews on Goodreads, and I highly recommend the one written by The Bookish Elf…she helped me to understand better what might have been the author’s intent. (Also, she’s one of my favorite people to follow bc her reviews are perfection…if someone knows if she has an acct here on IG, please drop me her handle! 🙏🏽)
💰 Told in interconnected stories, I felt I had a better grasp on some than the others. It was interesting to be able to look at the same event from different perspectives, and really reiterates that we don’t always know the full truth - just the truth as **we** see it. I also liked how she played around with the idea of how the media distorts the truth to fit the narrative they want to highlight. It reminds us, especially in this day and age, to be very, very careful of what we consider the truth to be.
💰 All in all, I’m sure this is much more brilliant than my brain is able to comprehend. I keep reading reviews hoping to continue to make connections and see what Brown was trying to do.

Do not get the hype about this at all. It’s the first Booker shortlisted novel in years I haven’t liked. Feels like a bunch of barely overlapping stories and completely unfinished.
