This felt like the bones of a beautiful story but it was lacking the meat. There is so much more I'm longing to explore. I feel like Ellie and Miah have all of their relationship behind the scenes. We've just seen their relationship begin and suddenly the book is over.
The message, however, is painfully clear and fleshed out.
A good, quick read.

If You Come Softly tells a story of first love, and heartbreak. The author states it’s a Romeo and Juliet retelling about an interracial relationship.
When I first began reading this book I was unsure of the direction of where the book was going. Then I noticed the subtle hints and everything came together at the end creating a heartbreaking conclusion. It was so abrupt and it caught me off guard.
I enjoyed the straightforward and simplistic writing style of this book it gave it such a timeless feel. This book was written twenty years ago but the issues addressed within it are still relevant to this day. Despite this being such a short book it was very impactful in its message.

“Time comes to us softly, slowly. It sits beside us for a while. Then, long before we are ready, it moves on.”
This book was written 22 years ago.
Why does this book feel like it was written yesterday.
Read it. I implore you.

I will read anything and everything Jacqueline Woodson writes. This book drew me in and had me sobbing in less than 3 hours. Beautifully written.
I didn't know how many pages there were nor when the books were released. I thought, when I first saw the new cover, that it was a new release. I read the first few pages and really felt as if it was happening today because of the racial subjects. Although the few remarks from the two protagonists made me wary. They were innocent and blissfully ignorant to what was happening around them.
This book made me cry. I seriously didn't expect the ending and it kind of made sense because life is as unpredictable.
