THAT ENDING whatttt
I loved this book so much more than I thought I would! It feels like it was written this year not 20 years ago!

A good and interesting story, but not a lot of depth to characters or detail.
What is it with all the books I’ve read this year deal with sadness/death
"Thing about white people ... they don't know they're white! They know what everybody else is, but they don't know they're white."

Thank you, John Green, for quoting this book in “The Anthropocene Reviewed” — in one of the most vulnerable chapters of Green’s novel I found a skim-and-you’ll-miss-it reference that brought me back to “If You Come Softly” by Jacqueline Woodson.
It’s been a while since I’ve cried from a book, and I thought that meant something about me has changed. It actually meant it’s been a while since I’ve picked up a book as remarkable as “If You Come Softly.”
Woodson (as well as the phenomenal narrators for the audiobook edition I was fortunate enough to find on Libby) unleashed a flood of emotions I wasn’t sure I was capable of feeling from reading anymore.
At 3am I let the waves crash over me, stifling my sobs only to listen through the last chapters of this audiobook before submerging myself in grief and bereavement for these characters. Even knowing the fate of this love story did nothing to soften the blow of tragedy as it struck at the most tender moment.
Beautiful through and through and through. 5.0/5.0

This book is written in very simple prose, I would almost say that it better fits J FIC than YA if it were not for the subject matter. The love story is exciting, the discussion of interracial dating & race in general is well done and incredibly relevant 20+ years on, it will also break your heart. The ending is sudden and intense as these stories often are, so full of promise, hope, and love, only to end without warning. Would definitely recommend to teens and adults.
