Kayla did it againāanother 5-star read!
City of Smoke and Brimstone was such a ride. Fast-paced and action-packed, with my favorite characters of all time. I loved every second of itāit was intense, funny, witty and now I need the next book yesterday š©š
The plot? Wildly entertaining and packed with twists. Thereās a lot happening, but Kayla ties it all together so well. Sheās a master at dropping little Easter eggs that seem insignificant at first but turn out to be so important later. My only (tiny) critique is that the first part felt a bit too eventful for meāit took a moment to settle into the rhythm.
One of the things I adore about Kaylaās writing is how she builds a perfect found family š«¶ Characters are introduced gradually, giving us time to connect with them all. Nothing feels rushed, and that slow build makes every POV interesting and emotionally engaging. I was fully immersedāthere wasnāt a single perspective I didnāt enjoy and that is rare.
Now onto Loren and Darienāmy favorite couple š Their bond keeps growing stronger, and you can feel how much they impact each otherās lives. Even when things got messy, their relationship never felt shaky. They stayed steady through it all. I did want a bit more spice š„ but the romance deepened so beautifully that I didnāt mind. It was heartwarming to witness.
Shayla and Roman also went through a lot, and watching them navigate those struggles was so entertaining. Theyāre hilarious, sharp, and undeniably hot š The plot twists surrounding them caught me completely off guard, and Iām dying to see what happens next.
Special shoutout to Mortiferāmy emotional attachment to him is real š„ŗ and this book took me on a roller coaster! Malakai had me giggling out loud every time he opened his mouth š I also really enjoyed Jewels and Travisās POV! Their dynamic, especially with Malakai, was so fun to follow. Pax? Total sweetheart š Arthur, always dependable. And Ivy⦠she really went through it in this one š
As for the villaināhe didnāt show up much in this book, but what little we did glimpse? Terrifying š¬ I already know the next book is going to bring chaos, and if heās even worse than CoLaL⦠yikes.
The book ends on a cliffhanger and I am not okay š and one more year until the next one is pure agony.
I love this series with my whole heart. If you enjoyed the other books, youāre going to love this one too š

Prior to release, Kayla Edwards would label this book as āeveryone is in dangerā andā¦.YEP! It was a thrilling story and I loved it. Kayla just has such an easy-to-follow writing style that allows for so many characters, without ever being confusing, itās so impressive.
The visuals introduced here, after the events of the previous book are so eerie and evocative. I could feel myself starting to choke on the shadows, felt how trapped I would be within Yveswitchās darkness. It was so cool.
I feel like I saw a different dimension to Roman in this book, he was far more vulnerable, which would be true for someone whoād going through the trauma he has - bravado to mask the vulnerability. And to see him work through those feelings to essentially rise from the shadows (wink wink) to take up a leadership position by the end of the book just makes me love him more! I enjoyed that we saw more of everyoneās story, not just Darien and Loren.
This book was action packed from the get go. The foot was on the gas the whole time. But despite just how much was happening in these 750+ pages, I never felt overwhelmed, confused or āover itā. I am so curious to see how this all plays out!!
Also - I love love love that this one ended the way it did. When there was talk of a bomb, I got a little worried it would be similar to the previous three - but ending with this Avengers-esque call to action was perfect.
