The first 2/3 or so comprised a highly original series of short stories that were very cleverly constructed, commenting on a variety of societal issues like capitalism and fatphobia. The tone was funny and fantastical and quite tongue-in-cheek, albeit with elements of body horror. Then the last section took a wild turn involving kidnapping, drugging and graphic torture, and the ending was ultimately dissatisfying. It took me a while to settle on a rating for this. That ending really didn’t work for me.

Quite honestly, there's not a lot I can really say about this book other than I really enjoyed reading it. To be honest, it probably would have been a 5 star for me but the sudden ramp up at the end and the
out of the blue torture scene
definitely had a knock on my final rating. That said, overall I really enjoyed reading this book. I read the translated edition and I felt the translation was done very well. I loved the writing style and found it very easy to read and get sucked into from page one.
If I had one criticism (other than the wildly out of nowhere pre-ending) it would be that we didn't see or hear enough from/about the symptomers. I really enjoyed what we did get from them, but it would have been interesting to hear about more of them.

The whole entire book was so full circle. There were so many unique characters and ideas that continued to be brought up throughout the book. There were so many perspectives and the idea of individual experience that came up throughout the book, and it truly made me rethink a lot of things within my own life. The main characters was very complex but truly showed the essence of human nature.
