Sam returns to her family home in North Carolina to find her mother acting out of character, the house redecorated, and a vulture perched on the mailbox. At least her Gran Mae's roses are still thriving...
This was a bit of a bonkers read. Supernatural horror, mixed with botany, entomology, archaeology, and references to Thelema no less!
I liked the characters, the internal monologue was comical, and the events, while pretty out there, made for a really exciting read.
Easy to polish off in a couple of longish reads.

T. Kingfisher is such a wonderful story teller. This one both made me laugh and cringe at horror of what happens in this story. Highly recommend for a pretty fast and very entertaining read.

This book violated “show don’t tell” so much. i was in so much pain reading it. it took me months to finish. I cant believe i put myself through this for the lamest climax on earth involving demon babies and a “ghost” made out of roses. easily extinguished with weed killer. what just HAPPENED

I absolutely adore the writing style and all the fun facts about bugs! However,
I felt like the her using new found magic at the end felt too much like a sudden final boss anime power-up. I think it would have been more satisfying if she had been struggling with her own encroaching magic more prominently throughout the book, or if she hadn’t been able to fully control the magic at the end. It felt like too easy of an out.
