Very similar in content & tone to the other books I've read so far by Kingfisher (with the exception of Nettle & Bone, which was more fantasy than horror), but it's a winning formula & I can't get enough of it. Starting off strong with a plus-size thirty-something FMC staying with her mother during a break from her work as an archaeological etymologist, we plunge into suburbia with a twist—on an otherwise normal street, enormous vultures perch on nearby rooftops & mailboxes, intently watching the house—& things only get stranger from there. As always, Kingfisher expertly balances the line between horror & humour, with you laughing out loud even as goosebumps appear across your skin. Thoroughly recommended.

Usually not my genre, I wanted to explore a bit. I was expecting something scarier (and I'm a coward), but the book is entertaining, and a really fast read. Perfect for a light read.

A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher is a southern gothic story following a middle-aged woman named Samantha as she returns to her old hometown to help take care of her ailing mother. But when her mother's ailments turn into something paranormal - and old relatives come back to bite - she questions everything she knows, including her connection to the monsters that might lurk just beneath her old childhood house.
I'm not usually one for horror or for gothic narratives, but T. Kingfisher flew me away. She was a highly recommended author, and she did not disappoint. I listened to the story via audiobook, and it became even stronger as I continued reading. Kingfisher is a master of building tension and writing authentic characters, and I loved reading this story about Samantha and her growing relationships with those in her hometown. It was absolutely haunting, a definite 10/5 star read! I'll be diving into her other books in no time!

My favorite so far that I've read of hers. Roses in book aren't sentient, but are possessed.
