Oh I thoroughly enjoyed this. T Kingfisher delivers yet again on a unique premise, loveably weird characters, and captivating writing with a sense of humor. I loved Sam, though Hermes definitely stole the show. I know it’s not for everyone, but I’m learning I’m generally a big fan of southern gothic stories. This book is not overtly scary by any means, but it slowly ups the creep factor in a great way.

Side note, the acknowledgments section was so funny and it fully read my mind. Literally I was thinking
if I had a nickel for every time T Kingfisher wrote a book about evil magic roses, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

This deffo didn’t feel like a typical Kingfisher book, nevertheless… this was still amazing.

The description at the beginning and the nonstop puzzling things happenings were really long to read, felt pretty dragged out and deffo felt it could have been condensed a bit. But I love this author and her other novels and novellas are amazing so I’m willing to look over this.

Over than that, it was CREEPY. Loved how intense the descriptions were, you could deffo imagine everything that was going on. It didn’t feel rushed either.

I loved the mum so much, so innocent n cute ugh I feel so bad for her. I loved all the characters as well, it gave a nice small town where everyone knows everyone but in a friendly way.

Not as horror and scary inducing as her other novels but this can be considered as a pallet cleanser I think.

Can’t wait to read her romance books if they’re anything like this!

i think i just gained like three new phobias

about damn time someone did southern horror right.

my only quip: food lion is NOT mid-range. FL is expensive as all get out. But regionalities I guess xD

fr though I freaking loved this. so much. spoke right to my heart that someone finally did our kind of horror right.

It was a decent read until the sorcery part came. Maybe I'd like it better if it stayed as a simple haunted house. I'm not saying that the idea is bad, I just didn't expect it'd turn out that way. While in a way it made sense, but I couldn't feel the thrill nor suspense here, not even when the story supposedly reached the climax.
