I loved the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants novels so much, so I decided to read this, thinking it would be just as good. I liked this book but it was not as good as I was hoping it would be. Love the title and meaning behind it though :)

3 Willows is about 3 firends, Polly, Jo and Ama. Each set out to do different things for the summer. They each have their own personality and characteristics that set them apart. Ama in on a wilderness trip for the summer, but the only problem is she does not like outdoors. Will she overcome her fears and enjoy her trip? Jo goes to a family beach house working as a busgirl. Should be a fun summer, right? And Polly wants to change some things about her and live a glamours life. What is she willing to change?

Overall, this was a good easy book to read. I think the reason why I only give it 3 stars is because after reading the Sisterhood book I had high hopes that this would be just like them. But it wasn't. I didnt love the characters as much as I did in the Sisterhood. But non-the less it was good.

Jo, Ama, and Polly were best friends all through middle school, but now it's the last summer before high school and they've grown apart. Jo's chasing after the popular crowd. Ama's concentrating on her studies. And Polly's wondering what happened to their friendship. 3 Willows follows each of the girls as Ama goes on a dreaded wilderness retreat, Jo navigates the social hierarchy at her beachside restaurant job, and Polly pursues an ill-advised quest to become a model.

It's no Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, although some of the Sisters make appearances in the book, but by the end of the book I appreciated it for its sweet story. It took me awhile to get into it because the characters don't have a strong bond at the beginning and I was left wondering why I was supposed to care about them. But by the end of the book I was interested in all of their stories and I'll be looking forward to hearing more from these characters.

Good story about relationships, story unfolds nicely.

I'll admit it - I like the Traveling Pants books. They're fun, with just enough reality, and the overlapping stories work well. So I was curious to see what Brashares did with another group of girls - whether 3 Willows felt repetitive or like something fresh. I think the answer is a book that will keep fans happy without stringing out yet another sequel.

3 Willows takes place in the same world of the Pants books - several characters from that series make guest appearances, but in a way that wouldn't confuse readers unfamiliar with the first series. What I liked best is the way the story examines a different type of friendship between the girls. They're not best friends anymore, and they've been drifting apart as they head to high school. They're spending the summer apart without expecting to miss each other. But of course the story ends up bringing them back together. Nothing earth-shattering or amazing here, but a sweet story about growing up, friendship, and family - things that middle school girls are thinking about as they start high school.

It sounds like Brashares is planning on at least a sequel, but in the meantime this is a fine stand-alone title that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to fans of the Pants books or girls who like stories about friendships. The audio version is fine, although sometimes the accents were a little distracting.

From the author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, this book is about 3 girls who live in the same town as the Sisterhood, and the Sisterhood girls are famous in their high school. But Polly, Jo and Ama never met the Pants girls, they only wished growing up that they could find a talisman item like the Pants to symbolize their friendship. Now, the summer before 9th grade, Polly, Jo and Ama have grown apart. They're awkward around each other, they're not really friends any more, for no particular reasons. And they're embarking on different journeys this summer: Ama, never an outdoorsy girl, gets put in a wilderness leadership camp out West, where she is miserable on hikes and putting up with bugs and (gasp!) no hair products! Jo gets a summer job at the beach and finds out her parents are getting a divorce. But there's this hot guy who kisses her on the bus, totally out of the blue. hmmm, romance? And Polly, left behind while her friends travel, decides she wants to go to modeling camp. But it's going to be harder than she thought. A nice book about rediscovering friendship and finding one's own way at the same time.

Slower that the "Traveling Pants" books, but could develop into a good series.

I'd give it 2 1/2 stars. Not great, not bad.
