Dark-Hunter Talon was screwed over royally in his mortal life - by a goddess. And as if that wasn't enough another Celtic god wants a piece of Talon and to help him he has a Greek god. could it get any worse? Well, yeah it could actually. Talon gets run over by a Mardi Gras float and saved by... a distraught human called Sunshine. Sunshine is a painter with too many thoughts in her head, but when she meets Talon and saves him from the daylight she only has one thought - she wants Talon. And when he wakes up he finds out that Sunshine is just the type of woman he could fall for. But the gods out to kill him are not on their way back and Talon has to fight to keep what he wants.
This installment of the Dark Hunters series takes us further into the realm of this very interesting world created by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Ancient Celt Talon, along with fellow local Dark Hunters prepare for the lead up to Mardi Gras and the dangers it always poses with the increase of Daimon activity during the celebrations. It's not enough that Dionysus, the Greek god of wine claims this celebration as his own, but during this time New Orleans is awash with supernaturals and things tend to get tense between the different factions.
Talon has an interesting and of course traumatic back story yet manages to maintain a bit of a sense of humor as well as his ability to care for others despite living alone in a Louisiana swamp. Being cursed by the Celtic god of war, Talon is doomed to loose anyone he loves so keeps himself at arms length from people and makes sure that no one becomes too dear to him. However, when circumstances puts him in the path of Sunshine Runningwolf-that's right her name is Sunshine-Talon's world in rocked in more ways than one. He can't resist the intense attraction to her and finds himself on the losing end of the battle to shield his heart.
One of the problems that I am having with this series is that I am not enjoying the lead female characters very much. Sunshine for me left much to be desired. The thing that is repeated often in this story is that she smells of patchouli and turpentine and Talon loves it. I mean the man can't get enough of that scent. I have smelled patchouli before and it is not a sexy scent. And turpentine? When was the last time you took a trip down the aisle at Lowe's or Michael's and wanted to get a big whiff of turpentine? That's just not hot. On top of being a bit on the stinky side Sunshine is a forgetful hippie artsy type with a kumbaya mentality that just grated on my nerves. Now Talon on the other hand? A sexy Scott with Celtic symbols tattooed across his body? Now that's hot! Again, winner on the male character and a whammy on the female character. Maybe it's just me and I am being too critical, but I just can't seem to help it.
I will be continuing on with the series though. There are so many aspects to this world that I hope will keep me coming back. The Dark Hunters, the possibility of the shifter community playing a bigger role later on, and how the Greek gods and other supernatural creatures fit into these stories all intrigue me so I refuse to abandon this series just yet. I am looking forward to reading the next book which is Zarek's story. I love a damaged, troubled alpha male with an attitude and an ax to grind. I have a feeling that Zarek's story will be traumatic and I hope his soul mate is a strong interesting woman because she will definitely have to have some strength to deal with someone as angry as him.

I considered putting this book down and not to finish it. It took about half way into the book until something resembling a real storyline finally emerged. Nice sex, granted. But the constant descriptions of how gorgeous everybody looks on every second page started to go on my nerves eventually. Not much vampire hunting going on, despite that being the sole reason of being for the main characters. Still, the whole idea has some appeal, so I guess I will venture on to book #3, as it is already sitting on my shelf.

Teenage me is very happy to get nearly all of the Dark Hunter novels and read them all…but when I checked to see if I reviewed this one…turns out I didn’t. So let’s get started with the review…with a bit of a complaint.
The complaint is…
Talon of the Morrigantes, Spierr of the Morrigantes, my boy…I FEEL SO SORRY FOR YOU BECAUSE SUNSHINE DIDN’T FEED YOU SOME *ACTUAL* FOOD. No offense to the people who are vegan and what not, because I understand. But good lord, there has to be some Popeyes SOMEWHERE around your house or at least a couple miles so he can get some chicken or some Mickey Donalds or hell, some goddarned WENDYS so he can have his burger or some chicky nuggets or SOMETHING. Good lord. Maybe every once in a while you can go to Longhorn or Outback to get him a nice, juicy steak in here??? Please??? (okay, mini food rant over)
But as I was saying, Talon of the Morrigantes is a Dark Hunter…who got hit by a Mardi Gras float. Thanks to Sunshine Runningwolf, the woman that saved him, he’s okay…but he falls in love with her (and the spice? nice) but then he gets distracted when another ‘Acheron’ tells him to say with Sunshine, and he starts to talk all weird…when Talon knows his friend don’t act the way he used to, he realizes things aren’t going the way they’re supposed to…
That’s when things started to hit the fan.
Like the fact that his sister wasn’t around to warn him about that, Talon and Sunshine thinking that she’s his reincarnated wife Nynia (she is if she’s having flashbacks about him) and the fact that he punched her ex-husband while in Sanctuary while also accidentally exposing the Dark Hunters?? Y-yeah that…that happened…but hey, at least at the end Sunshine and Talon found out that Sunshine’s grandmama is the Morrigan and that both of them were under her protection after Talon bit and drank some of Sunshine’s blood while they were getting their swerve on on the grass, but then they had to stop Dionyous, Camulus and Ash’s brother, Styxx before they released Apollymi the Destroyer…only to stab Acheron in the heart and made him switch his humanity off, but Talon calmed him down, and he was back to normal.
Oh yeah, Zarek was in there, but it was like he was getting in trouble left right and was working with wink, blink, and nod, but then when Sunshine made the deal to give up her soul for Talon…it didn’t go well. There were screams and a bolt of lighting…sigh. But at the end, Talon and Sunshine did get their HEA, and now I’m worried about Zarek. And like Simi says…Artemis is a bitch-goddess…no seriously, she is.

Night Embrace is the second official instalment in the Dark-Hunter series and the third book if you include the prequel about Julian of Macedon. This instalment follows Talon, an ancient Celtic warrior who has been cursed to forever lose those he loves after pissing off a Celt God.
As well as diving into the life of Talon, this book sets the scene for our next novel Zarek. However, I felt the big point about this book is how much we learn about Acheron. There are definitely some big reveals about his character in this one that set the series up for some big overall plot lines- whilst still leaving tonnes of mystery.
The big focus of the book was still the romance, and that was its strongest element. The love interest in this one is Sunshine, she's fun-loving, a massive hippie and a very lively character. I really liked her and Talon- particularly in the early stages of their relationship I thought she was well crafted (if a bit eccentric and crazy). I feel like by the end of the novel she'd lost a little bit of her initial spunky personality and just been all about Talon. I really liked how their relationship evolved and developed. Having read this before (quite a few years ago), I'd forgotten how the end all pans out and it made it all the more exciting for me.
I do feel however, that these books have so much great potential for bigger, more in-depth plot lines about greek mythology, celtic mythology and all things ancient. I also feel like there are so many great secondary characters like Acheron, Artemis, Nick Gautier and all the other dark-hunters (past and present) that we just don't get enough of within this one book. I think if the secondary cast gets a bit more time and the world-building strengthened these books could definitely rank more highly for me. Having said that, these books are still lots of fun, entertaining and I'll happily devour 2-3 at a time. However, they do appear to follow a very basic formula which is why I tire quickly of too many at once.
I would recommend this series to paranormal-fans and fans of Greek mythology, but I would say don't have big expectations.
