Well then...buckle up for unpopular opinion time!

I'm not gonna sugar coat this: Sunshine ruined this book for me.

She was the textbook example of a ditz. Look, I get it, authors sometimes like to add in ditzy characters as a form of comedic relief. I even enjoy it sometimes. When done well, a character like that can be endearing or somewhat charming in their naive nature. In this case though? It was too heavy-handed. Sunshine was dumb, plain and simple. It wasn't a cute kind of dumb either, it was cringey. Even Talon, the love interest, actively wonders to himself why he hasn't lost patience with her yet. Early on, Talon acknowledges that if Sunshine was any other women, he'd be super pissed at her for her behavior. BUT, since she's a special snowflake that also happens to let him have sex with her, he lets it slide. Sounds great. Bravo. Gold star.

On top of Sunshine's nonexistent common sense, her dialogue was horrible. There were plenty of moments when it felt like she was a twelve-year-old trying to describe something. An especially juvenile line that comes to mind was when she was referring to Talon's genitals as a banana (keep in mind, this was said to be "sexy" when they were hooking up at a certain point). Like, am I crazy for thinking that's odd? She's supposed to be twenty-something so why is she speaking like a child? Her personality took me right out of the story. It's too bad, because I liked Talon in the previous book and wanted to see what his relationship would look like. Turns out that it was underwhelming.

Oddly enough, I was more interested in Talon's relationship with his dead wife than anything having to do with Sunshine. I get there's that weird twist and link from past to present going on, but the flashbacks were way more intriguing than the present day events. I wish the book was more focused on his past and his dynamic with his wife. Those parts were actually pretty decent and I appreciated every time we were given tidbits of Talon's past.
The dead wife's personality was way more likable to me than Sunshine's. Talon mentions that they have some similar mannerisms but that their personalities are different. So, even though Sunshine is a reincarnation or whatever, I think she's more annoying in the present day setting.

The thing that really carried this book for me were the side characters. Zarek and Acheron were the saving grace of the story. They were, hands down, the most intriguing characters in the entire run of the novel. I almost DNF'd Night Embrace but decided to keep chugging along because I wanted to know more about Z & Ach. I truly enjoyed their contribution to the plot and thought that they were just the right amount of mysterious to keep me reading.

I'm not confident that the rest of this long ass series is worth it for me. However, even though I'm disappointed and somewhat annoyed at this book, there's enough about the side characters and subplots to make me slightly curious about some of the other books. I think I'd at least give Zarek & Acheron's stories a shot, but I doubt I'm going to be committed to the series as a whole.

I love this series!

Seriously so conflicted about this book/series. I like a lot of the characters and find their backstories supper interesting, but the romance is rather eh at best, and honestly it gets a bit repetitive and ridiculous, sometimes so much so that I'm rolling my eyes as I skim through the scenes, just wanting to get back to the actual plot....

This installment of the Dark Hunters series takes us further into the realm of this very interesting world created by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Ancient Celt Talon, along with fellow local Dark Hunters prepare for the lead up to Mardi Gras and the dangers it always poses with the increase of Daimon activity during the celebrations. It's not enough that Dionysus, the Greek god of wine claims this celebration as his own, but during this time New Orleans is awash with supernaturals and things tend to get tense between the different factions.

Talon has an interesting and of course traumatic back story yet manages to maintain a bit of a sense of humor as well as his ability to care for others despite living alone in a Louisiana swamp. Being cursed by the Celtic god of war, Talon is doomed to loose anyone he loves so keeps himself at arms length from people and makes sure that no one becomes too dear to him. However, when circumstances puts him in the path of Sunshine Runningwolf-that's right her name is Sunshine-Talon's world in rocked in more ways than one. He can't resist the intense attraction to her and finds himself on the losing end of the battle to shield his heart.

One of the problems that I am having with this series is that I am not enjoying the lead female characters very much. Sunshine for me left much to be desired. The thing that is repeated often in this story is that she smells of patchouli and turpentine and Talon loves it. I mean the man can't get enough of that scent. I have smelled patchouli before and it is not a sexy scent. And turpentine? When was the last time you took a trip down the aisle at Lowe's or Michael's and wanted to get a big whiff of turpentine? That's just not hot. On top of being a bit on the stinky side Sunshine is a forgetful hippie artsy type with a kumbaya mentality that just grated on my nerves. Now Talon on the other hand? A sexy Scott with Celtic symbols tattooed across his body? Now that's hot! Again, winner on the male character and a whammy on the female character. Maybe it's just me and I am being too critical, but I just can't seem to help it.

I will be continuing on with the series though. There are so many aspects to this world that I hope will keep me coming back. The Dark Hunters, the possibility of the shifter community playing a bigger role later on, and how the Greek gods and other supernatural creatures fit into these stories all intrigue me so I refuse to abandon this series just yet. I am looking forward to reading the next book which is Zarek's story. I love a damaged, troubled alpha male with an attitude and an ax to grind. I have a feeling that Zarek's story will be traumatic and I hope his soul mate is a strong interesting woman because she will definitely have to have some strength to deal with someone as angry as him.

Please, oh please get better. I really want to love this series...

Eh. These book shave interesting characters, but I get a little bogged down with the love scenes and the predictability. I think it's a shame because the layered characters could really go somewhere. I may read others in the series for a quick fun read. Maybe.

Hmm... I actually felt very excited when I started this book because it has one of my favourite themes which is
reincarnation
but later the story progressed in a way that made me lost my interest. Even the climax of the book felt comical for me.
Everyone was trying to save the other person. Everyone was sacrificing themselves for the other person. I mean like meh. Ohthedramaahhh.

Not sure though now whether I should continue with the series. The last time I read book 1, it was 2 years ago. Will it be another 2 years before I read book 3? Who knows.

I read this book years ago in paperback and didn't realize that it had been reissued in September of 2010 in hardcover. So I bought the hard cover thinking it was a new book, until I started reading it.

I greatly enjoy all the Dark Hunter and Were Hunter books. I can say after rereading this one the stories only get better!

As an ancient Celtic Chief, Talon made one serious mistake - he killed the son of the war god Camulus. Outraged over the deed, Camulus cursed him. Everyone Talon loved would die a horrible death in front of his eyes. But when Talon's clan slaughters his sister he sells his soul for vengeance against them.
Fifteen hundred years later, in modern New Orleans, Talon is now an immortal protector who keeps mankind safe from the creatures who would prey on them. A life he's happy with until he meets Sunshine...

Hmm...after reading infinity I decided to get into this series. I read Julains book first and then got this one. I have to say I liked it but I didnt love it

After reading a lot of paranormal romance I have to say Im kinda getting used to the layout of these books go. Immortal, tortured, leather clad man seeks end of boring existance but then meets some gorgeous nubile hottie and after severaL complications they get a HEA. The main unique point of these books is the interferance from the Gods of all the ancient civilisations. I really enjoyed all these Gods and their individual powers and focuses. Saying that I was always a sucker for Xena warrior princess for the same reason.

Anyway Talon was hot but a bit dull for me to be fair. Yes he had a bit of a torturous past but the fact that he had spent the remainder of his existance whoring around New Orleans didnt really make me feel sorry for him to be honest. I was much more taken with Zarek and am DYING to read that one. As for Sunshine she seemed a little too split personality for me. At some points I actually like the woman. She was determined to get what she wanted, but not so much that she would sacrifice her beliefs for it or play second fiddle to any other dead wife. She was funny and at the same time sweet. She was, at some points, the pefect lead woman charcter because she wasnt a simpering idiot or a snipey Bitch. Unfortuantelely at certain points of the book I almost hoped she got ran over by a bus. She was a hippy chick with no memory or sense. To me the the two seemed like completely different charcters but luckily the good one appeared more than the bad one. Their story was sweet and did a good job of introducing some of the other characters and the mythology of Kenyons world.

Overall a nice read but not enough grit for me to class as a must-read. Now onto Zarek!
