MY RATING: āļøāļøāļø

Okay - I did really enjoy reading this book. There were parts that I really liked, and I definitely laughed at some parts during the first half. As a whole, I didn’t dislike this book.

I liked some of the characters (Tina and Maggie, Hank, Tristan on occasion), but found most of them weren’t developed in the way I’d like. I felt like Xavier didn’t have a personality outside of just being perfect and grumpy, and it felt like he’d wait for Samantha to tell him how to feel and then he would feel that way. Samantha felt emotionally immature, as did much of her family, and I felt I didn’t get to know them well.

This also made the rest of the book feel kind of underdeveloped. I absolutely loved the first bit of this book, but by the end, felt like I had read two different stories. There was a lot of telling instead of showing, which had me questioning why they fell for each other in the first place, and why so quickly. I was not feeling any chemistry for the most part. The usual Abby banter wasn’t there, and a lot of the writing was super plain. I had to suspend my disbelief a lot, and felt that we didn’t get to really see why our two main characters felt so strongly about each other. While the beginning was cute and gave glimpses of their personalities, the last 100 or so pages were just kind of depressing and I felt a lot happened, but also nothing at all. Like constant trauma but also super repetitive and also like they’ve seen each other a handful of times what’s going on here.

The storyline with the mom was also very very heavy and I felt it was kind of underdeveloped as well.

Also I get that Samantha is a social media manager, but there were a lot of TikTok and pop culture references that felt kind of forced and became a bit much for my liking. I also found this with other topics that I felt were brought up randomly just to say something about them for no reason other than having a good take (like infertility).

Like I said before, I didn’t dislike reading this, and I read it quickly. It didn’t deliver the way Abby usually does for me, but of course, I’ll be picking up her next book and hoping for some more of her usual magic.

This was a gut wrenching romance to read. Sometimes I wanted the mom to be put in a home so Samantha and Xavier could finally be together. However, I loved how Abby made it full circle with Dr. Hank coming in as a hero and bailing Xavier out so he could be with Samantha.

Loved this story and their journey with Samantha’s mom’s dementia. The connection with Dr Hank and Xavier was wonderful. Dual narration was great.

I laughed out loud, and cried out loud too. I think my favorite of her books yet! Beautifully done. Hilarious and heart wrenching.

Another amazing book from Abby Jimenez. I laughed out loud at the witty dialogue, cried with the characters when they experienced sadness, and simultaneously wanted to read faster to get the story but also read more slowly to delay inevitably getting to the ending. Loved it.

As a big Abby Jimenez fan, I was so excited to read this book! While most of it I adored, some areas just fell a bit short for me. The use of ā€œchronically onlineā€ dialogue in books has always rubbed me the wrong way, and there was a bit too much of it for me personally. Especially the repeated ACOTAR references (which I’ve never read) came off a bit cringey. There was also some build up of characters, like Xavier’s friends, that never really got touched on, which disappointed me a bit since they seemed so instrumental in his life. However, despite these things, I thoroughly enjoyed this book… considering I finished it in 2 days as a busy full-time college student! It actually made me laugh out loud and cry just as hard. I fell in love with Xavier and Samantha’s story, especially having experienced a long distance relationship myself. I felt all of their emotions deeply and was happy to see that there was no unnecessary break-up towards the end, which seems like a huge clichĆ©. I’m not normally a huge fan of an insta-love trope, but I feel that it really made sense here so it didn’t bother me. It was also really sobering to read about Samantha’s mom’s journey with dementia and seeing what all it involved. Despite the book having its cringey moments, I really enjoyed this and would recommend!

She seems to outdo herself with each and every book and this one is no different. While Just for the Summer may still be my favorite, this one is a super close second!

I felt ALL of the emotions. It was funny, sweet, and emotional. Sometimes it’s so easy to get attached to characters that you almost feel what they would be feeling with them during the hard times. And this book definitely had some hard times.

It also feels like even though the MC’s are far apart, their time together is quality time and it’s written in a way that you almost don’t notice they are apart for a lot of the story. That aspect was so well done!

I never thought I’d enjoy a story about a couple struggling through a long distance relationship and navigating some TOUGH family/life issues but… here we are! I loved every bit of this.

And as always, humor and banter was perfection!
