The weaving together of three stories in this book simply did *not* work for me, I could never connect with any of the individual stories enough and got bored. But I did really love the writing, so I would still want to read something else by Cunningham if it focused on one POV.

I wavered between 3 and 4 stars for this book. After sitting on it over the weekend, I think three is the most appropriate.

The book is well written and generally enjoyable, despite the fact that in many ways nothing happens. It is creative and comes together at the end, but ultimately is the typical story of the privileged woes. These are easy to relate to, but the story is overdone in literature. I understand that privileged woes is perhaps not giving the nuances of the stories justice, especially where there is a layer of feminism and LGBTQ acceptance. But, it feels so much like it is still centered around the pain and suffering of a sort of privileged depression that makes it not my favorite story.

I have heard good things about the movie, so I need to check it out.

Anyway, I still think I would recommend.

Would have been three stars if the author hadn't been so obsessed with making his characters kiss "on the mouth" in every single scene. I'm not a prude, it just felt so forced and hardly ever served some real purpose.

My friend reads this book every year and now I understand why, so full of pathos and sorrow but expressed so beautifully, I can imagine every time you read it that you’d discover something else. Maybe I’ll try it again next year!

Don’t love buying a book with a cover that has been updated to advertise the film adaptation - I don’t know why, it just irks me! - but it was the only copy available in the shop at the time so what can you do?

Really enjoyed this anyway. Each character feels very trapped. Even the cake crumbs in the icing! I like how everything comes together at the end, very subtly done. Time to educate myself with some Virginia Woolf this year I think!

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't get into the book (or the movie, for that matter). I think I'll try again at a later date.
