Tightly written, succinct beautiful prose. I'm not sure why I'd never read this, though the memories from the movie had me second guessing that fact the whole first half.

As always, I love this book. I love this book. I can reread as many times as there are days in the year and I will still love it. It is hitting different now that I am in my late 30s, the sense of possibility closing, but then that clarifying so much about who we are and what we want. Or at least how to live with it.
What a fantastic novel. I'd seen the film when it came out, not realizing it was a novel. After reading the novel, wow. Such an impact, such a brilliant novel. I love how the stories criss cross and mimic each other. It's a brilliant read. Cunningham knows how to spin words into genius.

The Hours is a story about three women in three different eras who are each struggling to find meaning for their lives: Clarissa lives in present day New York and is planning a party for her oldest friend, Laura lives in the 1950s, is pregnant, and is supposed to be preparing dinner for her husband's birthday, but she can't put down her copy of "Mrs. Dalloway", and Virginia Woolf is thinking what Clarissa Dalloway will do as she creates the 1925 book.
I've never read "Mrs. Dalloway", but didn't find that to hinder my enjoyment of this book as Michael Cunningham weaves their stories together, showing that each generation struggles in much the same way - to find a reason to live.

Not sure if I liked this so much because I had seen part of the movie or because it was illustrated well
