This has become one of my favorite Dahl books, right next to BFG. I have some cranky old people in my life I'd love to use Georges medicine on. :-)

I'm against animal testing at the best of times but giving a chicken anti-freeze is very unresponsible, I've informed PETA about this and they will be sending topless activists to the publishing companies headquarters shortly. I was all onboard for making this recipe until he added horseradish sauce too, clearly George is the esoteric antagonist of the story and Dahl made a bold choice telling the story from his point of view. I feel Bret Easton Ellis may have read this in his youth and it inspired him to write American Psycho.

Nothing much happens in this book. George as an eight year old should have more common sense than to mix a bunch of random products and feed it to someone. His dad at least should have known better and stopped him than further encourage him.
SpoilerWhen the grandma dies at the end no one really cares for her or even mourns her loss. The father even encouraged that she take the drink even after he knew that it was very likely to shrink her beyond normal size if she took it in that quantity. There is no real point to the end of the story other than that they now have a farm full of large animals and some chickens with weird proportions.

I remember making "witch potions" in the kitchen when I was a kid. I'd throw together everything I could find in the frigde, the pantry and I'd even get into some of the spices in a cabinet that I wasn't allowed to open (sorry mom) and then I'd have a grey, lumpy concoction that had a horrible smell. I'd put it in a fancy glass, which I also wasn't allowed to touch (sorry again mom) and after that I would proudly show my "potion" off to my mom and tell her to drink it only to be terribly offended when she turned it down, or worse, only pretended to drink it.

She'd tell me that making these "potions was wasteful and then she'd explain that I could still make them but I could only use a little bit of each ingrediƫnt. She also told me that obviously I shouldn't drink the potion no matter how magical it looked (it really didn't though) and I'd always promise to listen to her only to come back the next day with an even grosser potion.

One day she bought this book for me because the premise reminded her so much of me and we read it together every night. We'd read about George and his mean grandmother. We'd read about him making his own potion and feeding it to his chickens and then we'd read about him desprately trying to remake it only to fail miserably. And then when I got older I'd read it to my little sister.

Now that I'm older, I obviously realise that she was right and making these "potions" was incredibly wasteful. I still really appreciate her never keeping me from living in my own fantasy world. She always encouraged me to do what makes me happy and reading this book has made me realise that even more. Honestly it sounds like she died but I assure you my mom is still going strong in her 50s ;)

The fact that such a simple story can help you make such important, special memories is really amazing to me.
Thank you Roald Dahl for being a part of my childhood and thank you mom for supporting me always <3
