dark tense fast-paced

This book really captures the violence of colonialism and masculinity. The native people's retaliation is both inevitable and tragic. Leguin leans on a few tropes to tell this story efficiently, but the first person perspectives largely work well to create a contrast between the two cultures and the man trying to bridge them.

Evil people are not exceptional. Complicity is not complexity. Lubyov was not a savior.

Le Guin has some interesting discussions on on colonialism, violence and dreaming (!) in this very short novel, obviously inspired by the Vietnam War. She can pack more into a hundred pages than most authors can do in five times the length. I do however don't like her writing style in her sci-fi novels as much as when she goes fantasy.

Decent, I haven't read much Le Guin in my time, other than a few sparse short stories here and there and a half hearted attempt at Wizard of Earth Sea years ago when I wasn't as well read as I am now.

I wouldn't start out with this one, while the ideas of colonization, idealist societies, and dreams into reality are used really well in this novella, they're a bit heavy handed in their use.

Same with the characters, they all play a "role" in the novella rather than being an actual character, Villain, Messiah, Traitor, etc. I think I would've retained more names and read through it quicker if it wasn't all so dry.

2/5.
