The Road

Cormac McCarthy

3.92 AVERAGE

I read this because I wanted to have read the book before I saw the movie. I really enjoyed it. One things to note, there isn't any proper dialogue with quotation marks, but after a bit I got used to it and really got into the story.

It takes place in the future, but isn't filled with science fiction or fantasy elements. It is more of a survival story that follows a man and his son as they wander the road just trying to survive all the death and destruction that has come upon the earth. There are some very graphic and horrific elements to the story. Some of the other survivors are not "good guys" as the book describes them, but instead are "bad guys" and will do ANYTHING for food and survival.

I really enjoyed the book and look forward to the movie. I am slightly worried that they will add some characters and plot lines to the movie that weren't in the book just to make it a more visual experiences for the audience.

I really struggled with the slow pace, the overly prosaic writing, and above all, the lack of quotation marks.

Loved this book. Yes, it is sad, moderately depressing, but it is very well-written and the characters are real and honest. I want to re-read it again soon.

Brilliant. Compelling. Could not put it down.

I can see how this might not work for some people, with how sparsely it's written, with little world building and even no character names, but I thought it was brilliant. So dark and atmospheric and I even teared up at the end. This will not be my last McCarthy.
