I think this series keeps getting better and better. Anne Bishop might just be my new favorite author.

This is another fantasy series by a female author, with a female protagonist, I discovered in “romance” but, while there has been a developing character connection over the past 5 books (yes, five books, one relationship), trust there are no heaving bosoms, torn bodices, or sex depicted. This is just straight up great fantasy world building. That happens a lot to female scifi and fantasy authors: auto shelved in romance. I do read romance, no judgement, but it’s clear assumptions and BS plays a role. Sigh. Anyway. Complex and complicated but clear enough to draw direct parallels into modern society. This series is truly great. It is slow paced, which didn’t bother me because it is character driven, but I can see that some readers might get antsy. This is clever writing with intense themes about the dangers humans present to themselves. Perhaps we can take something away from the “savagery” of animals.

Its so hard to review this book knowing it's the last one in the series that will be focused in lakeside.

The Others to me IS SIMON AND MEG and the thought of new different characters makes me feel so upset:(
I love Vlad, Tess, Henry, Sam, Blair, Nathan, Skippy, Grandfather Erebus, Nyx, Jenni, Starr, Jake, Winter and basically everyone in the lakeside courtyard and theirs no room in my heart for anyone new or different.

Also the cassandra sangue are such an important part of the story for me I can't imagine a book without them. I want to know more about Jean and Hope and I'd like a better outcome for the others out there that are still not safe.
Meg still hasn't finished the prophecy card deck for them and hasn't fulfilled her role as the trailblazer.

I think there's plenty more to explore for the other characters to, in particular Vlad and Tess and Sam.
The humans don't interest me at all and when the Elders are trying to decide how many to keep I'm thinking none! It's The Others vs the humans and always will be for me.

I still have hope that there will be more for Simon and Meg and The Others in Lakeside. I hope Simon and Meg will have prophet puppy's :O
but if this is the end it was beautiful.

So good.

This was such a great ending to this storyline. I loved all the characters. I read it slowly because I knew it was the last one and I wanted to savor it. I know there are the three books in the same universe but I wanted to savor the story with the characters I had come to love. Well done Anne Bishop.

I think this is the last book in this series I am going to read. I love the world that Anne Bishop has built, but I believe it deserves a better female protagonist. Simply put I find Meg not all that interesting in her own story. I admit that I have never gravitated towards female protagonists that are more stereotype than a nuanced contemplation of the female condition and Meg is the classic damsel in distress that everyone gravitates to just because. Everyone is either protecting or saving her-- she embodies vulnerability and nothing else. As a result, Meg reads flat and that is extremely disappointing given the richness of the world that Bishop creates in this series.
