One of my favorite books of childhood - I must have taken it out from the school library forty times. A sweet, beautiful story which opened my heart to the loving precepts of Buddhism.

I feel like I need to think about this a lot more. Also go do a lot of research into how well this represents the culture and religion that frames the entire story. Also, I should have guessed the cat would die from the title, but the way it happened really took me off guard. I don't know what to think about this book. The illustrations in this edition are beautiful! And the little poems from the housekeeper are interesting. I feel like the ending would go over many kids' heads.

- The title of this book should have been The Artist Paints with His Imagination. There is a cat, and it has a decent role in the book, but most of the story is about this artist imagining he is different animals.
- The cat's story is odd yet tender. I was happy and sad for the cat in the end.
- The book is really short, so that was nice. I hope there are more short Newbery winners.

A journey of Buddhism and how each animal was blessed, except for cats. And, about the little cat named “Good Fortune”.

Newbery 1931
Calm, peaceful, quiet book. Short too. :) The Newberys are definitely showing improvement as we get out of the 20s.
