I liked some of the descriptive language and I liked Cassie but I wanted to spend more time with her and actually understand her. You spend a lot of time in the mind of a dude who is “not like other guys” but sort of is because he’s creepy like always thinking about whether the women are attractive and writing off his housemate as a crazy spinster-type. I have no idea why he does what he does and acts the way he acts, even though he is reflective and self-aware, it’s still vague somehow. He plays the victim non-stop, it gets hard to root for him. I love a flawed character as well but this was just hard work. Book is full of cliches and far too long, introducing so many characters that even though I read this book over one week, I got confused because they would suddenly mention a personal assistant or someone as if they were a main character. Oh and I don’t think he was a very good detective. Book even essentially says to the reader “yeah well you didn’t figure it out either you sucker” and I’m like - “Um I did figure it out, it was pretty predictable where this was going based on the context of the story and the protagonist”. Plus very disappointing ending, which you could feel was coming up because there was a huge question mark and only a few pages left, seemed unlikely there would be a resolution in that time.
The 2nd book I've read by Tana French and just as good as the first.

Came for the foresty archaology vibes, stayed for Cassie Maddox. I was along for the ride and pretty invested in figuring out the puzzle, especially swept up in the two timelines. I don’t know much about being a detective but I think this requires quite a lot of suspending disbelief (Ryan on the case in the first place most pressingly).
This is only my second TF book, but in both, she’s excellent at writing men you kinda hate but are still invested in, which is impressive.
Also, a wonderful wonderful intro description of Dublin summertime.
