The narrator was insufferable.
I shouldn’t have waited this long to read Tana French. Thrillers, especially psychological thrillers have this touch of closeness that pulls me in so quick I literally lost track of time. And French did a great work, people. A more character development book with an interesting case and great plot twists. Definitely worth reading.
Recomendado.

The narrator was so pretentious and his friendship with Cassie was so stupid and infantile, with all their dumb inside jokes making outsiders feel strange, like he’d say they just had a friendship on another level but no, you guys are just dumb. And in the end he got so angry with her for absolutely nothing and it was so stupid. And then the crime that was actually interesting was never solved and the one that was just there for kicks was solved in an uninteresting way. Dumb. It could have been 100 pages shorter.

I listened to the audiobook, which was decent, but I thought it was about 2 hours too long.
Right off the bat I thought the main chatacter (Adam Tyan) was sexist, but then you learn he hates everybody, men and women alike. Thenthe main character was endearing and he has a great relationship with his detective partner, Cassie. Eventually Ryan's attitude sours and I don't really understand why besides the current case they are on could be related to the trauma he went through as a kid. That makes sense, I just didn't get the motivation for why he does exactly what he does other than he needs to go to therapy.
The ending was good and interesting, I just zoned out for some bits in the middle there.

As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children. He is gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a 12-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox (his partner and closest friend) find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery. Now, with only snippets of long-buried memories to guide him, Ryan has the chance to uncover both the mystery of the case before him and that of his own shadowy past
I really enjoyed the twists and turns that were featured in this book. The murder was not something easy to put together and French did a great job of incorporating Ryan's backstory.

I decided to read this book after seeing the BBC Dublin Murders program. The original novel was better, although the program was well done and followed closely to the book. I got to know the background of the detectives quite well over the course of the story. You did have to accept the excellent chemistry between the detectives which evolved over a short history. We do get a better idea about the supporting characters of the story in the novel version. The plot does have a nice twist, which was spoiled for me since I saw the program first - but it still unrolled nicely, even though I knew what would happen. I will read the next book in the series and hope that the quality continues.
