"If there's one thing women do better than disappearing, it's protecting our children."

I've read plenty of books where Sarah Pekkanen teams up with Greer Hendricks, but this was my first time reading her solo. I could see the similarities, but this one seemed darker to me...and i loved it!

We alternate POV's from Ruth (mom) to Catherine (daughter) and speaking for the narration, i wish there were either two narrators or she'd maybe changed her voice some, as it was really hard to distinguish without looking at the chapter title.

This was a slow burn, which I personally really like in thrillers, however the action picked way up at the end. But that last chapter though?! Yes ma'am!

Thank you to Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy

A suspenseful, twisty thriller about a mom and daughter on the run with a secretive past.

Listened to this via audiobook, and I was hooked from the start. Ruth has a secretive, potentially dangerous secret from her past, and will do anything to protect her daughter, Katherine, from It. Even, murder. Katherine, now 24, starts to notice all her mom’s lies, but doesn’t know why, and begins investigating her mom’s past. As the past and present intercept, secrets come out, and Katherine begins to understand why her mom has been lying all this time.

Is It a little outrageous? Absolutely. Did i eat It all up? Definitely. It kept me interested from start to finish and i listened to It very quickly. Enjoyed It as much as Sarah’s other novels with Greer, even though Greer isn’t an author on this one, It gives very similar vibes. Definitely recommend!

This started a little iffy the first 50 or 60 pages, but once I got hooked, I couldn't put it down.

It also offers my love for short alternating POV chapters.

Catherine has recently graduated with a degree in nursing and is shortly headed to Johns Hopkins to accept a full-time position. A few weeks before leaving, she notices her mom's memory is fading and showing symptoms similar to those of her patients at the center she works part-time with that specializes in those with Alzheimer's. After a visit to her doctor, it's confirmed that Ruth has an early case and her time is limited.

Catherine starts to cancel her plans for the future and puts everything into her mom's care.

Ruth, on the other hand, is having flashbacks to a different life and is chronicling them so that one day Catherine can learn the truth about their family.
