Rating would be higher but I really HATED the ending. Do not understand Nori’s decision AT ALL.
This family has ties to the Yakuza and literally SOLD HER TO A BROTHEL and then KILLED HER BROTHER and she decides to stay and screw over her son - the child of the man she loves - to take up the mantle of nobility at a time when Japan’s nobility class is actively eroding. Whyyy? When the greatest victory over these people would be to ESCAPE the trap! Let the house be reclaimed by the government and the estate languish and go have a happy life with your friends and hubby in Cornwall!!! Akira never wanted the family mantle either! If he had his way, he would have been a musician in Europe! She could have honored his legacy more by becoming a professional violinist. Noah didn’t deserve this and Nori deserved a happier ending.
The only thing I can think is maaaybe there’s a sequel in the works about this family, but man! What a bummer!

Fifty Words for Rain MAY be in the running for one of my top books in 2021 so far. It was gorgeous. I didn't want it to end. Nori's life was filled with sadness, hurt, isolation, and pain. She was not treated well yet learned to love anyways. The reason I bumped it down to four stars was the ending. Though it was a long book, the ending felt rushed. I understood her choices at the end and why she did what she did but I wish her life as a result of that choice had been fleshed out more. The writing was beautiful and I will be recommending this book to everyone I know!

This book started out beautifully but the middle and end left a lot to be desired. The writing is really good. The pacing and the melodramatic events at the end of the book made me choose a rating of 3 stars.
