I felt like I was reading fairytales/folklore/gossip about the femme trans experience. I loved how the author portrayed her story with witches, mermaids, gods, etc. I’m happy that she found a community that was accepting of her right away but sad that it led her to violence. I liked that she had separate chapters about her ghost, pocketknife, and sister. I wanted to be her younger sister because of the wise advice she gave her sister (plus the cute gifts she sent along with her letters).

I hope the author is finding herself and she doesn’t plan to run away from good things forever :) I recommend listening to the audio. It played into the folklore theme for me.

Note: I still confused on her relationship with Kamaia (?) Sorry for the bad spelling. I listened to the audio.

kai cheng thom is able to reel you in less than 200 pages with strong language, fantastical elements of dying mermaids and fierce femmes.

“I don’t believe in safe spaces. They don’t exist. I do, however, believe in dangerous stories.”

This fabulous memoir follows the journey of a young trans girl who has decided to flee her oppressive hometown of Gloom, "where the sky is always grey and the rain is always falling", in search of love, sisterhood and herself ✨

She finds herself on the Street of Miracles, and finally finds a sense of belonging in a group of fabulous, somewhat broken but absolutely fierce femmes, each with her own unique story to tell 💅

“Taller in my heels, I am closer to some dangerous heaven.” 👠

When a trans woman is found brutally murdered, she joins forces with her sisters to form a vigilante group to fight back the transphobes and misogynistic police officers who patrol the Street of Miracles. This is where things get a little out of hand..

“Sometimes fiction is truer than facts, and the trouble is knowing which fictions are facts and which facts are fictions.”

A one-of-a-kind, riveting debut memoir, that combines gritty realism with magic, a bit of madness, and a lot of badassery. Not a traditional memoir, but one that breaks down pre-defined gender and genre norms. An enchanting story of freedom, sisterhood, and transformation.👩🏼‍🤝‍👩🏽

Honestly, I cannot recommend it enough. Thom's poetic yet blunt writing style makes it an absolute pleasure to read.💝

I completely agree with the many reviews that point out the important stories that are being told with this novel and I loved the mixing of narrative genres, with letters and poetry being tossed in with the prose. However, I'm struggling with the fairy tale magical realism of this fictionalized memoir. I kept trying to figure out real-world correlations, mainly geographical and the mermaid (was it a dolphin, a dead body, or just a metaphor?), to the story. I know that it is NOT the point of this book, but at any lagging point, my mind started to try to puzzle it out. The book also didn't stick with me after I put it down or after I finished it.
