I went into this without reading the other series as I was unaware this was not a standalone tale. Due to this I was extremely confused and didn't understand anything that was happening or who anyone was. Large arches are completely skipped over with a few lines which I know is because it is meant to give context to series but I honestly wish it wasn't listed as it's own series on Audible but rather as part of the original series

This is the first of a planned series of novellas(*) taking place alongside the main story in the Tarot Sequence (which is excellent urban fantasy set in an alternate world with Atlantean magic wielders and strong found-family elements). It switches the focuses to the younger characters: Quinn, Max, and Anna, showing what happened to them during book three of the Tarot Sequence, The Hourglass Throne. I enjoyed it very much. I like the young point-of-view characters, especially Quinn. I liked the Fool. I liked the slant look at the adults in the Tarot Sequence. The friendship between Quinn and Max is a delight, and it was lovely to see it from both sides.

I note that much of my pleasure in reading this derived from prior familiarity with the characters. Plus I think it would be somewhere between confusing and very confusing if read as a standalone work. Also, towards the end, while still enjoyable, the plot felt tailored to the events from The Hourglass Throne rather than to Quinn, Max, and Anna.

Five out of five prophetic stars to everything that touched on Quinn, but four out of five stars overall.

(*) Although I think "The Eidolon" outgrew its plans and ended up as a short novel.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

I just noticed the Brand comment in the copyright page and now I need to check if it's in the other books.
