I have shockingly little to say about this, which is kind of a bad sign, I suppose.

By the end of the novel, I guess I just didn't care that much about it all. About the romance between the leads or even the continuation of the story in the hands of others.

The novel does a lot of things well, but it somehow manages to never make us care that much about what's happening. And part of it, for me, is maybe that it's hard for me to care about a man who is psychologically abusing an elderly man in order to steal his life's work from him so that he can be with a woman he's loved from afar for years.

Anyrate, the stakes just never seemed to be there. And even when the stakes were laid out clearly, I didn't really care that much about the characters.

I don't know. It's not a bad book but it's also not a good one.

Wonderful world buillding, grand suspense, and an air of mystery. For fans of environmental storytelling, decadent prose, and magical realism.

DID NOT FINISH

I think I’ve lost count of all the times I fell asleep reading this I’m so sorry

I read this over a decade ago and was not impressed. On my re-read I cannot believe how mistaken I was. The writing is beautiful and feels like a richly crafted fairytale

Actual rating 3.5 stars

4.5/5 Stars. The storytelling in this book is fantastic and the author is wonderfully descriptive in every aspect. It was very easy to picture every detail in the setting and characters. Where the book slightly faltered for me (hence the .5 star from perfection) is the plot. Although the conclusion is very satisfying and the character growth from the two leads is very well done, the introduction of the pivotal third character is a bit of a slower burn and didn’t quite lead to their choice at the end for me. Altogether a wonderful Victorian fantasy book, great for those who want to escape for a while.
