I hate to rate this low, I really do, because I can see the value in this story and there are some very moving scenes. However, the writing style of this extremely did not work for me. I also couldn’t stand the romance, I found it to be really forced and uncomfortable. When the focus was on native cultural practices and community, I really enjoyed it and I think that’s where the best moments in the book come from. But unfortunately, everything else was quite a let down for me :(

I loved this book and plot, but it felt long. I wish some scenes were cut. If it was just a bit shorter, it think it would've been perfect.

I literally just finished reading this book, and wow, I am stunned. This book is really such a beautiful work that brings light to Indigenous communities, specifically in Northern Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. As a Michigan native and a troll (someone from the Lower Peninsula is called a troll because they live below the Macinac bridge, connecting the peninsulas), I loved reading about Daunis and her journey navigating community, family, and external law enforcement.

I really, really loved this book. Even if you are like me as someone unfamiliar with Indigenous culture, Boulley creates an accessible space to write based on her experiences while bringing an unknowing reader along with her. I found the Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe language) adds a beautiful layer of meaning that transcends English to pinpoint the message Boulley wants to convey. I also thought that although a hefty read, every scene was vital to the story. I also thought that Jamie and Dauntis's relationship was a pallet cleanser for me. I also like how Dauntis decided to let him go instead of staying with him. Jamie represents her past self in a way. Someone who is not connected to one community and lives in multiple realities, and thought the split was a good creative direction.

My only critique is that I felt the beginning was a bit slow. The first third of the book moved slowly for me. However, this book required a large amount of scene settings before getting to the main plot. I also wish there was a trigger warning before Grant assaults Dauntis. There was no warning, but I think Boulley did a good job describing what happened without being graphic.

Overall, it is a great read and informative of Indigenous culture and how US law intersections with tribal law.

4.9 stars from me!

I am obsessed with this book. It’s so so good. The storytelling. The learning of Ojibwe culture. The fast paced last parts of the book. So good.
