ON THIN ICE By L.A. Cotton

When Harper Dixon discovers her father is the Lakeshore U Lakers new assistant coach, she wonders if her life can get any worse.
Enter Mason Steele.
Arrogant. Cold. With enough ice around his heart to freeze anyone who gets too close.
When Mason proposes one night to exorcise the fiery attraction between them, the last thing he expects is to wake up to an empty bed the next morning.
Or to find himself unable to get his new coach’s daughter out of his thoughts.
He’s Lakeshore U’s broody left winger with the weight of the world on his shoulders.
She’s vivacious, persistent, and has puck bunny written all over her.

On Thin Ice – Lakeshore U #2 - Review

Couple: Mason Steele & Harper Dixon

Author: L.A. Cotton

Tropes: college romance, hockey romance, enemy to lovers, forced proximity, forbidden romance, coach’s daughter

Review: L.A. Cotton outdoes herself in this second book of the Lakeshore Lakers boys. The dual POV romance between Harper and Mason is swoony and angsty but what drives it home is the rawness of these two imperfect characters.

The book begins with Mason trying his best to hate Harper and avoid her at all costs. His desire to remain unattached to anyone drew me in since I wanted to know what made him that way. His friendship with Noah (from book 1) also made me curious since the two of them are so different you wouldn’t expect Mason to get along with him.  As I learned more about Mason and his past I found myself loving his character and understanding his reluctance to get close to anyone…enter Harper.

What made Mason’s story was the desire to protect his family. The inclusion of his younger brother Scottie created the barrier he used to keep his distance from Harper and I laughed when she needs up being Scottie’s after school monitor. Scottie may have been my favorite secondary character besides Noah in this book since he is devious in his ways to get his brother and Harper together. I also loved all his comedic relief that elevated the story.

Harper on the other hand is very good at portraying a happy go lucky college student who loves hockey. The book centers around her relationship with her father, or lack thereof, and his new position as the hockey teams assistant coach. Harper’s character also drew me in at times because her desire to be loved is heartbreaking and real.

I found myself happy the book went into more depth about Harper’s relationship with her father and why he treated her the way he did. When his actions and feelings toward her become recognized by the team and Mason, I was ecstatic that he took her side and stood up for her.

I enjoyed the development of feelings between the two of them and especially on Mason’s part. The book is slower burn but explosive once the two get together. The dichotomy of Mason’s character creates moments where you want to slap him and then give him hug. I was also routing for Harper to make him see reason about the two of them and admit his denial.

Rating: 100+, Mason Steele everyone!!

I liked this book, but come on, Noah Baby is my number one 🫶🏻

I liked the story of this couple, both together and individually, their stories touched my heart and more than once my eyes filled with tears. Mason with his family is something to admire, he thought about them and how his future could affect them all, but he also didn't want to leave what he loved the most and that is hockey; on the other hand Harper my girl, in the first book I had my doubts about her and now I know her whole story, her family problems made me want to hug her all the time; besides seeing Aurora being such a good friend and how she has grown in the storyline fills me with happiness 🥺

It was a good read, fast and most of all full of beautiful and REAL moments. Of course there were Mason's actions that I didn't like because I think he was mean to Harper at first and how he tried to hide her feelings and the attraction he had for her made me have some doubts.

I liked it, I enjoyed it and most of all I was more excited with the epilogue that the author gave us!!!

🫂 Thanks to the author for the arc in exchange for my honest review 📚!!

OMG, yes, yes yes!! I loved this book so freaking much! I mean it’s a hockey romance with the grumpy/sunshine trope. Add in the found family aspect as well as the autism and celiac disease rep, what’s not to love?

My heart hurt so much for Harper in this book. You could tell just how alone she felt, even when she was around her friend group. She’s such a beautiful soul that seeing the struggles she had and the issues she dealt with on a daily basis was just plain rough. But let me tell you, her character and the type of person that is really shone through when she was around Mason’s little brother Scottie. Her compassion and understanding when it came to him made me love her even more. And let’s face it, I think we can all credit Scottie with being the one to bring Harper and Mason together.

Speaking of Mason, that grumpy man stole my heart even when he was being an asshole. Having an autistic brother isn’t easy but the way that Mason loves Scottie and wants to be there for him no matter what is enough to make any girl swoon hard. Then when he finally pulls his head out of his ass and realizes exactly what Harper means to him? Yeah, he bulldozed right past everything to make her his and keep her, including standing up to her asshole of a father.

Seriously, I feel like each book in this series gets better and better and I can’t wait to see what L.A. Cotton has in store for us next!

Stopped listening with 1 hr to go because it was so painful. The plot was just not there for me. Even when the characters got together I was not interested.
