Wow. What a complex story. If you’re looking for something light-hearted, this is not it. Here Comes the Sun takes place in Jamaica. The story follows Margot, her mother and her baby sister. Tourism is both their lifeline and destroyer. Margot has greener grass complex (ie, is poor and thinks money will solve all of her problems) and uses her younger sister to justify her dirty work.
I didn’t think I’d like this book at first because I was tricked by the title (I try not to read reviews or summaries beforehand), but this one will follow me for a long time, especially when I travel to foreign countries.
“How would visitors know the real stories behind the faces of the wooden masks they’d buy to hang on walls; the rag dolls they’d use to decorate unused furniture in their houses; the figurines they’d place on mantels that they can marvel at then quickly forget?”

Beautifully written and skillfully plotted, but man, it’s sad. Layers of pain that this family can’t stop inflicting on one another. I definitely want to read Dennis-Benn’s latest book now.
