Loved it! This was a fast-paced read with just the right dash of paranormal activity and an ideal amount of teen drama. Like, Dawson's Creek meets Dead Like Me. The use of Les Mis is so on point. As an adult, you look back and see that the number of times in your life that you feel Les Mis level emotion is probably five, tops.
But as a teen? As a teen, it is Les Mis every fucking minute, 24/7, non-stop I LOVE HIM BUT EVERY DAY I'M LEARNING, ALL MY LIFE I'VE ONLY BEEN PRETENDING. WITHOUT ME THE WORLD WILL GO ON TURNING, A WORLD THAT'S FULL OF HAPPINESS THAT I HAVE NEVER KNOOOOOOOOOOWN.
I loved it. I loved it all.
And now I have to go turn that damn soundtrack on.

I bounced around about what to rate this book. On one hand, I did enjoy the story and I thought for the most part that the novel was well written. On the other hand, I felt that the whole romantic subplot just kept dragging on and getting in the way of the real plot of the book coupled with one of those sort-of non endings that I realize are necessary put still bug me.
I settled on something like 3.5 stars.
Delaney is your average intelligent-but-totally-ordinary high-school student until one day she falls through the ice of a local lake. She's stays underwater for eleven minutes until her friend Decker (romantic interest one) pulls her out. Miraculously, she not only survives, but seems to have avoided any permanent damage. That is until she finds herself being drawn toward the dying. Along the way she meets Troy (romantic interest two) who is also drawn toward the dying. Hijinks ensue.
My problems with this book stem mostly from the romantic tumor of who will Delaney pick between Decker and Troy despite the answer being obvious from the second chapter. The serious issues of trying to save the dying but being unable to change fate's design and the issue of euthanasia are shoved to the side while we endure listening to how gross it is that Decker is dating someone else.
I would have loved to see the subplot of the problems between Delaney and her mother get more development instead of the obligatory young adult love triangle, but this book was still an enjoyable read and I wouldn't hesitate to suggest it to someone looking for a break from the standard "girl meets vampire/werewolf/fairy" young adult fantasies we see so much of these days.

An interesting idea, set-up, and characters, that did not quite resolve into a book. I enjoyed it and will probably read any sequels, it just didn't quite work as a story. As a set-piece, it was dandy.
I was surprised by this book. I didn't know what to expect, which is a good start. I didn't know who I wanted to like what to root for, or what would happen.
It's also a stand alone book, with no sequel. Which I really like!
Oh god are you kidding me?! I just noticed it says #1. Ugh now I'm quite disappointed. It was such a good stand alone book! Questions at the end, but in the good way.
I will probably have to read the next one, but still. Everything is sequels and trilogies these days.

Absolutely riveting! An intriguing story that pulls you in and refuses to let go. Constantly felt a complete whirlwind of emotions. Was the kind of book that I was constantly thinking about even when it wasn't in my tight grasp, inches from my nose. Totally different than anything I have ever read before and I absolutely loved it.
A lot can happen in 11 minutes....I personally can put on my makeup and brush my teeth and hair in 11 minutes. I can make coffee and breakfast in 11 minutes. And I can pump gas in 11 minutes. But in Delaney Maxwell's world she was stuck under a frozen lake for 11 minutes. She should have been dead. But her is she alive and well....well somewhat well.
Delaney and her neighbor Decker were playing on the lake in their town one day and Delaney fell on the ice and made it break. Once you are underwater and you can't get out after 4 minutes you lose oxygen to the brain and you start to become brain dead. She should be dead, but here she is alive and going to school, going to parties, and going to plays. So after they pull her out of the freezing she is in a coma for quite sometime. But then out of nowhere she wakes up. And she is alive and appears to have nothing wrong. But not everything is what it seems to be. She gets these feelings but she really doesn't know what they are or what they mean. But then she meets Troy and Troy helps her figure out what is going on her life and how to deal with it. But maybe it is not everything that she hopes for.
This book was a great page turner. The whole book kept you at the edge of your seat. It was suspenseful with some swoon. And for me that is perfect! Just a little swoon, not much. I would have to say the books that are coming out in 2012 are pretty amazing. I love it! :)

Could tell from the start that this was going to be a hard one to put down. I have to find out what's going on!
Rating: 2.5
Delaney was supposed to be dead. Her fall broke the ice underneath her and she sank underneath the deep waters. Her brain stopped working. Her heart stopped beating. For eleven minutes, she was under. But, for some reason, she survived. But that's not the only reason that makes her different from a lot of people- she's now drawn to whoever will die soon. Naturally, she's scared, but when she discovers someone who shares the same instinct as her she's relived. But things are changing... and she's unsure if it's for the better.
There was one major flaw in this book that really bugged me ever since Delaney met Troy: she doesn't question him. She never questions him on his lies. In fact, for the most part, she went along with him. She never asked him how he actually found out about her (although it does eventually get answered... but not through him) and he made many lies to Delaney's mother. He may understand what she has to go through but I can't understand why someone would want to be around someone who constantly hides behind his lies.
To make matters worse, however, her friendship with Troy almost breaks the long friendship she has with Decker. She almost lost her childhood friend because of someone she never even bothered to get to know all that well.
I don't know how much this all affected Delaney mentally but she certainly lost a few brain cells from her coma. She's not really all that smart. I even caught her in her own contradiction where she was convinced she wasn't all that smart. Later on in the book, she tells herself that she is. *pat pats*
This book has an interesting concept. This book, if written well, could've easily been a psychological thriller I think. It's hard to tell how the fall and the coma affected her mentally, other than what has been told from the doctor, because we only got a little glimpse of her past in the first chapter and that was to only really explain how the fall happened. So I can't really tell how she was affected, overall, and how it did change her mentally other than her being pulled to people close to death.
Still, there was no explanation on how she really survived other than she was just lucky. I still find it incredibly unbelievable that she didn't have to, at least, go into therapy to catch up on her motor skills and such. I quickly looked up some information on google and I found this website which I felt like would be more logical to what should (or could) of happened with Delaney: http://www.livestrong.com/article/184712-brain-injuries-due-to-near-drowning/ For those who are too lazy, here are the potential examples: brain hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain, which means lack of memory, judgement abilities and motor coordination), brain ischemia (insufficient blood flow to the brain) and central nervous system infection (... pretty much self-explanatory).
Overall, this book has potential but it wasn't taken advantage of. Which sucks because I was looking forward to this book. Oh well. This is good for a light read but not much else.
