The premise of the book series is believable but a little dark (within the context of the urban fantasy genre "canon").  The main characters are a strong magical female and a Mexican American human police detective.  They do play nicely off each other.  This is one of the three series set in the Old World universe.  I've completed two of the series and very much enjoyed the style and pace of the writing as well as the challenge of trying to figure out "whodunit" before the main characters do.  It's a very good read, highly recommend for fans of good urban fantasy.

You *can* start this series with this book, because it’s the first one with this protagonist (Lex). However, if this sort of thing is your jam, I recommend starting with Dead Spots, which is a Scarlett book, even though I like Lex (witch, army vet, devoted aunt, forever home for a menagerie of rescue pets) better. Because dang it, you know you want the whole story. In order.

Super quick audio.

Boundary Magic kind of reminded me of the first book from Scarlett Bernard series. Mostly because of all the supernatural stuff and the information about nulls. It also doesn't hurt that this is the spin-off series either. So, after realizing that I was kind of intrigued to see how this book was going to go.

Lex was interesting character. I was really liking her and Quinn, who just happened to be a vampire. So, naturally I was shipping them together. Besides all of that though, I wanted to know more about her and her twin sister. Now we know that she died but I kept asking why and how. We got little glimpses of her here and there, so now I'm hoping that we find more information about Sam in the next book. Please say it happens!

Other than that, Lex and her dark powers were another interesting twist. So if she had the dark magic.. does that mean Sam had the light? Is that why she was killed? AGAIN, I have so many questions!!

Overall, I need some more Lex and Quinn moments and I can't wait to see where this series takes them.

A fast but entertaining read that plays with the darker side of urban fantasy. If you like Kim Harrisson, you'll love this series.

its a 3.5 stars...

I enjoyed it i would have liked a little more chemistry between characters and felt a little more could have been done with Lex's powers, still i am looking forward to next installment.

Lex after returning from Afghanistan loses her twin sister and has a hard time adjusting back into her old life, it isn't until a lucky coincidence Lex manages to save Charlie her niece from some supernatural kidnappers that begin a turn of events that opens a whole tin of worms.

New series

The first book was pretty good. But, I won’t be continuing on with it. I did like the characters and probably normally continue, but I have too many books on my TBR.?

Book one of the "An Old World Novel" series by Melissa F. Olson narrated by Kate Rudd.
Lex is an ex army sergeant honourably discharged and working at supermarket trying to get over losing her twin sister less then a year ago and PTSD from been only surviving member of her unit.
One night a couple come into the shop looking for nappy but when Lex looks at the baby she realises it her niece and try's to stop her abduction.
While unsuccessfully trying to protect Charlie Lex is stabbed and dies but wakes up in hospital with mysterious Quinn in her room.
This is when she finds out that she's a extremely strong witch which is tied to death magic.
I really enjoyed this book it did remind me of Patricia Briggs Mercy and Sookie Stackhouse but without sex. Love that Lex is a kick ass badass ex army learning her new witch skills and not scare to shoot someone in head. Some scenes are violent and messy but very cool.
My only complaint is no adult relationship content but this book did have a lot to explain and action just hope something develops between Lex and another character.
I also hate with a passion cliffhanger which this differently leaves you hanging but as I really want to find out more about Lex I'll keep reading/listening. Fabulous narrator especially with Quinn voice.
