This one had a twist that I didn’t expect! Fun but again not a remarkable read. Great to pass the time and enjoy the scenery of 20th century japan.

this didn’t work for me!!

i have read 3 other books in the series. they were really good. however, this one felt flat. mainly because of so much telling and no showing. there were pages and pages of information that, although relevant to the plot, bored me.

i liked Kindaichi, but the rest of the characters were annoying. also that “ha ha” was getting on my nerves!

the mystery itself was bland. the reason for murders was ridiculous to me.
they agreed to murder the girls just because the one who was asking them was looking sad and heartbroken 🙄 also the priest said that one of the reasons they carried out the crimes was that the girls were like “cats in the heat”. the hell???

The writing was a little mellow but the story was good. Very Knives Out

The ocean actually features quite heavily, as the book is set on an isolated island, which becomes quite important to the plot. I got to the end of this book and was genuinely shocked by the ending - it was unique, even among the dozens of books I had read in the crime genre. However, maybe it was the blunt goriness of the murders or the honour/shame culture I can’t quite understand, but I still felt icky as I finished this book.

This is kind of a beach read. It had a lot of little cliche moments which for me took away from the overall drama. But overall a fun murder mystery.

there's a lot to unpack here.
