It took me longer than I’d like to admit, to realize I’ve watched the movie this was based of. I did watch it only once when I was a child and I’m glad because it made reading this book a completely new experience. And I do believe they are pretty different.

I only watched the movie once as a kid because it made me really scared. However I feel like the book (at least reading it now as an adult) has a different tone, a funnier and quirkier one.
I absolutely loved the ending and it’s message. My heart also squeezed when he talked about his shorter lifespan been something good because then he would die with his grandmama.

My ranking: book - 1990 movie - 2020 movie

i ate this up as a child. one of roald dahl’s best stories and criminally underrated

... A re-read for me.
When rereading you get to experience the Roald magic all over again. I know there are a lot of 'things' to discuss about him as a person, but the magic he has in his books is still quite remarkable.
I really enjoyed The Witches and am going for a 4.5 stars. Yes, I'm rounding down. The only part that really stuck out to me (every time I read it) was that the little boy was 'okay' dying in 9 years, which was longer for a mouse life. And talking about mouse lives. I wish Roald would have leveraged a more positive, life goes on even as you lose grandparents view.
As that's my only sticking point, still a wonderful, interesting book otherwise. Scary, yet funny. You never know the real life lessons you'll get when picking up a Dahl book, but I guarantee you won't expect them. ....

Decent book. Somewhere between the heartfelt "Danny" and the silly "chocolate factory".

My daughter is going through a Roald Dahl phase, so of course we need to read this one. I still picture Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch every time I read the book.
