I can't believe I never read this when it was age appropriate! I think this book would have made me look at every lady who passed by a bit differently.

Not my favorite of Dahl’s books. It may or may not have completely bored me to tears.

I love The Witches by Roald Dahl, a story about a boy, his grandmother, and their encounters with children-hating witches.
I read this book multiple times as a kid, enough to remember the overarching plot of the book, but it was interesting seeing the details through an adult's eyes. As a kid, I was simply swept up in the adventure and excitement of the story. As an adult, the scary or sad scenes hit me a little harder. That one scene with the sad-eyed frogs (that were former children) got to me.
Not everything I loved in childhood holds up, but this definitely does. I would give it a 4.5 out of 5

I understand that Dahl the man is problematic for many, but Dahl the storyteller is imaginative and captivating. What a fun and dark children's book! I especially love his instructions to children to question the humanity of the very teachers reading this book to them...it reminded me of the magic of story time in school. Actually story time is always magical!
'It doesn't matter who you are or what you look like so long as somebody loves you.
This was a big favorite of mine as a child, but it didn't hold up at all; I think it's the kind of thing kids would like more than adults. Knowing about Dahl's antisemitism now, it also has really nasty undertones, whether or not that was intentional.
