The White Book

Han Kang

3.9 AVERAGE

A collection of beautifully written short passages that appear to be meditations on the death of Kang’s sister, born before her, who died just two hours after she was birthed. Each meditation in the collection is centered around the meaning/implications of that death, grief/loss, and ability of the human spirit to persist in the face of loss. Each is thematically tied together with the color white. The artistry in Kang's writing was expected (she's won many literary awards). But what I found interesting was how culture shapes our association with color. A quick perusal of her list of white things shows us that. How she weaves that into her mediations to tie the whole thing together is beautiful.

Simply stunning.

I think this book was maybe a little too cerebral for me at this moment in time. I liked what I understood but I don’t think the nuance of a lot of the shorts made a whole lot of sense to me.
