Loved it loved it loved it!! The only reason I give it a 4 is, once again, because I got a little bored towards the end of it. Other than that it was amazing!

This mf love triangle is going to be the death of me!!!! WHY TF DO AUTHORS INSIST ON CREATING LOVE TRIANGLES!!!! I’m rooting for Chaol but like also I like Dorian, that’s why I hate love triangles a lot of the times the author makes it really mf hard to decide who you think would be better with the protagonist

This is how you write a book with a lot going on, without it being confusing and overwhelming!!!
Sarah, you should have looked in this book, when you wrote A court of silver flames. This had so much going on, with a lot of different elements, but it still tied together perfectly and still made sense in the story. I loved this book so much. And it was really what i needed after the first book. This book got me so hooked for the rest of the series. The love triangle that got way more complicated, but didnt interfeer with the plot, but actually drove it forward with a good balance between the romance and the fantasy elements were just fenomenal.

When I finished book one I knew I was rooting for Dorian, but this book changed everything. Chaol is my man. I love him so much. I know he did a lot of stupid shit and some I understand and some I really don’t, but I feel that just made him more human. You could relate to this character, because he did things that anyone could have done. Not thinking it through before doing things, because he cared for Celeana or didn’t want to jepodice his title. Even though it was infuriating to read from time to time, it was so understandable and relateable. Cause you don’t always choose the best option in the moment. But the way that he cared for Celeana, even when he made stupid disissions, was everything.

But the fantasy elements, lets talk about that for a second. This was what I expected to read about in this series. This was real and it was raw. I was on the edge of my seat, excited and nervous and atisipated the worst and hoped for the best. This was the bloody and brutal fantasy I have heard so much about. We did get a bit of it in the first book, but in this book, it really set the tone of the world and Celeana. And I am here for it. It really ventured into the more adult aspect of the book with more violence and more bloody gore and politics.

I loved that the use of magic came waaaay more into play in this book. It was showed a bit in the first book, but I feel like it was more used as a last option to keep the book going, rather than an actual plot point in the book. But in this one, the magic just went up several notches and I love it. Dorian having an actual important role in this book, rather than just being a pretty prince needing to be saved by either Chaol or Celeana. HIM HAVING MAGIC!!!! It was one of the best desissions Sarah J Maas ever made. It made him important to the story and gave him a reason to be there and not just to stand inbetween Chaol and Celeana. Though I do feel it came a bit out of the blue for the reader, it did an amazing job of making the characters find out in a very reasonable pace. Both Chaol and Celena and when they found out, which was first was at the end of the book, but also for Dorian himself. He found out in a heated discussion with his father and was scared himself. It wasn’t anything like “Oh yeah this magic im totally not surprised about, and for some weird unknown reason, I already know how to wield it”. It was raw and it was frustuating and confusing, both for him, but also for us as the reader, to see Dorian use this magic. AMAZING.

Also we got a lot more character knowledge and growth from Celeana. The way she became a totally different person when Nehemia died. Which, OMG I was so surprised and what the fuck was that for!!! But besides that we really got to see the “beast” Celeana. The one that was talked so much about in the first book, but we never really got to see. In this book we really got to see her. When she attacked Chaol!!! I was filled with so many emotions, I couldn’t put the book down. It was everything. I was “scared” for what she would do to Chaol or even Dorian. Anyone that got to close. And what she ended up doing to Grave!! That is the Celeana I was promised. And she delivered big times.
I cant wait to continue this series!!!

Why did this have to happen to Nehemia??? One of my favorite characters, not to mention all the blame that gets thrown on Chaol for her departure. I don’t get it.
I  absolutely loved this story though and I’m so excited to start the next book straight away, I need more answers!

Writing was much better in this one, I really enjoyed it. It was slightly slow to start but it picked up and the story was so good and original.
