Right off the bat, I'm hoping the romance formula where you immediately know who the love interest is, does not apply in this case.
He is morally grey...but more towards the bad side. IDK just seems to me like murdering children is sort of unforgivable?

The book is well written, I really do like Grace and I LOVE her two brothers (despite their very background role in this book!) I liked the view in Graces club, the drama about titles and their love for the garden, the sibling dynamics (between the siblings, not the lovers, to be clear) and some of the garden interactions.

Somehow, exactly what you will think will happen does. And somehow despite my overwhelmingly negative feelings, I'm not mad about it.its my least fave of the series, but honestly, I was pleasantly surprised overall!

This was supposed to be ewan's redemption arc but I didn't find anything to redeem him, so I couldn't root for him. Also grace seemed so strong and clever in books 1-2, but turns into a lovesick idiot in this book? So I didn't root for her either. I just couldn't care about either of these characters' outcomes.

Once again, Sarah MacLean does no wrong! Of course you feel more connected to certain characters than others and in this series Devil and Felicity were it for me.

I know Ewan and Grace's story had a lot of potential with their past of childhood love and shared grief and I can't say I'm disappointed. However, there was just something that kept me from fully connecting with them. I just didn't feel all the emotion I could have felt Also, I think Ewan got off way too easy with everything. Honestly, I thought his side of the story was somewhat weak. I would rather that his betrayal had been true and that he had come to see he had fucked up royally and set himself on a better course. I also wanted him to make amends with his brothers, since he behaved horribly, apparently out of love, but that does not excuse anything.

Anyway, I'm sad to see these characters go. I will remember them fondly. Now off to a new series! I know next book is going to be Sesily and Caleb's and I am looking forward to it, even though I can't say they made a huge impression on me yet. I wonder whose book it will be next. I can say I am more than a bit curious about some of the ladies who frequented Grace's club. Especially the Duchess of Trevescan. I sense a powerful woman and an interesting story with her absent husband. Also, I wonder who's "Lady A__, a quiet, aging spinster whose keen eye was worth that of a half dozen of Dahlia’s rooftop spies". If we haven't seen her yet, we better get to it soon enough!

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book.

I really wanted to like this book. I loved the other two books in the Bareknuckle Bastards series. I felt that this book was a bit lackluster. I liked that Grace was so strong and independent, but I had a hard time relating to her. Ewan did so much to get Grace's forgiveness, but she kept on rejecting him and rejecting him. I also felt that the tone in the first half of this book was either very treacly sweet or really dark and gritty--it was hard to take it seriously. I loved the way Ewan's character developed, and I appreciated how much respect he had for Grace and her decisions. I just felt that this book was lacking something that is hard to describe. Grace kept acting in a very contradictory manner. On one hand, she tells Ewan that she deserves the dukedom, but she is not being very realistic or serious. Then, when he burns down the ducal estate and fakes his death, she realizes how much she loves him. What?! I loved the sibling relationship between Devon, Whit, and Grace, but I wanted to see how they would bring Ewan into the fold. I also thought that Ewan should have just told Grace the truth about that night he allegedly betrayed them. It would have resolved everything so much faster. Another thing I struggled with in this book was the whole "one year later" thing that happens between one chapter and the next really drove me crazy. It felt like a cop out.

Grace and Ewan have loved each other since they were children. When Ewan betrays Grace and her brothers in order to become the duke's heir, she is bent on revenge. Ewan discovers that Grace is not dead, and he tries to get her forgiveness for seeming to abandon her when they were younger. Grace has grown into a different person during the twenty years that have passed since they have seen each other, so they have to learn to love each other for who they are now instead of who they used to be when they were younger.
