Holy grovel. Poor Ewan did nothing wrong and has been living in hell for twenty years all because these three idiots thought the worst of him in the situation. Even Whit, who is able to read everyone so well didn't figure it out. Honestly I need another full book of the three of them trying to make it up to Ewan. I did kind of miss why they fell in love the second time.
I get why craft-wise he needed to give up the Dukedom and that they couldn't be together with that standing between them, however logically he could have done so much more for the garden with the political power that it comes with. I mean, how else better can they make real changes for the garden without someone in parliament. He had already been working on passing some laws to help the people. Doesn't he have some other friends who have been supporting his role? Now he has just faked his own death? Grace could have been Duchess! Her rightful position! And the barenuckle bastards conveniently forget that Ewan is the one who grew up in the garden. This was his home first!
Also, there was not nearly enough Hattie in this book for me. We want more Hattie!
I love the angst and longing in this book. And seeing how one by one the Duke seeks forgiveness from the people he has wronged. Despite him having sacrificed his whole life up until this point for Grace.

Too fucking angsty. Ewan and Grace can just kill each other already. It’s so emo and just not what I expect from a romance novel. It just went on and on and on and I just wanted them to die already. It was almost like reading fanfiction which is weird bc I LOVE SM and I was really disappointed with this book even though I loved the other two in the series. Like, did it have to take 20yrs for these characters to get to this point? I don’t really think so which is why it seemed so ridiculous.
I wasn't sure how Sarah MacLean was going to do this because Ewan was such a villian through books 1 and 2 of the series but she did and it was so good.
The grovelling. So much grovelling to make up for all that he did when he went mad thinking that Grace was dead. I'm still a bit confused about who was responsible for the raids - did he or didn't he? - but the ending was so satisfying how Ewan just lit it all up and burned it all down.

Ewan you sweet darling man, my favorite Maclean hero, no competition.
Unfortunately the rest of this book did not quite live up to my very high expectations. I love my anti heroes/villains finding love but ugh...nothing exciting happened in this book????. It felt slow paced and around the halfway mark i was wondering when the book was gonna end.
I did like the ending and the "conflict" and this book made me cry for Ewan and Grace.

I think this one’s the best of the three, but overall kept dragging on after a certain point. I think MacLean’s pacing isnt for me :/

I will confess that while I love the Bareknuckle Bastards, and was extremely excited to read this book, it did not consume me the way the previous two did. While this slightly saddens me, I feel as though it is my own fault.
The previous two books contained characters with the ability to have lighthearted banter and enticing flirtations, and I fully anticipated more of that with this book. However, the truth of the matter is that the characters in this book had no room for it. They have been destroyed. Their past is heartbreaking and their current future looks grim, believing there is no way to overcome what has brought them to where they are.
I absolutely despised Ewan, seeing him in my minds eye, as an old, crotchety man with a sour face to match his sour mind, out to take down the Bastards and all that they hold dear. Through the seriousness of this story, though, I was able to change my view and finally see a man of the same age and possibly better caliber, of the two men I fell in love with in the previous stories.
And what can I say of Grace... this warrior woman with the strength of steel and heart of glass. I felt her fierceness and her loneliness. If there is one thing I love in a book it is a woman who knows what she wants and who she is and isn’t ashamed or tries to hide either one.
So, while it took me longer that I thought to finish... it was a wonderful closing. Of course, I am extremely happy to note there are some fantastic interactions with Whit and Devil that would have been sorely missed. And I was definitely most pleased to see all get their happily ever after.
