I really liked this novella!! It gave us some background into who Cole was (and we finally find out his real name). I would have liked to have known more about his powers and where they come from, but it was still interesting following the events that led him into Near. It's a tragic, sad story but one that fits his character well.
Coming right off of The Near Witch, I really only read this one because it came as part of the book. But I enjoyed this! Maybe my expectations were set low because I didn't particularly like The Near Witch, but I found it to be quick, tight, and intense. It was logical and beautiful at the same time. I could feel the frustration and was outraged at the abuse, but it was really outdone.
My stats are really turning out to be 50% really liking Schwab's work (Vicious, The Darker Shade of Magic series, and The Ash-Born Boy), and 50% finding it simplistic (The Near Witch, Gallant).

Added a lot of depth to The Near Witch by exploring Cole's back story. Shame it isn't woven into the plot of the main book, but definitely a great addition.
Same beautiful writing.

That was heartbreaking but I loved getting to know the origins of Cole.
I'm not going to count this towards my GoodReads challenge, as it was included in the new edition of *The Near Witch* but I really enjoyed this! Sometimes novellas and brief spinoffs feel solely like vanity projects, but this really adds to the story.
